Beschreibung

Joseph A. Altsheler's "In Hostile Red" is a compelling narrative set against the simmering backdrop of the American Civil War. Altsheler employs a vivid, realistic literary style that immerses readers in the tumultuous experiences of a young protagonist embroiled in the conflict. The novel combines elements of historical fiction with adventure, delving into not only the brutal realities of war but also the psychological battles faced by its characters. The interplay of action and introspection offers a nuanced exploration of loyalty, bravery, and the stark dilemmas inherent in a divided nation. Altsheler, a prominent American author in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, leveraged his experiences and extensive research into America's storied past to craft his narratives. His dedication to portraying the complexities of war reflects his personal convictions and the influence of the prevailing literary movement, which sought to blend truth with storytelling. Altsheler's upbringing in Kentucky—a border state during the Civil War—likely shaped his perspective and sensitivity toward the themes of conflict and familial loyalty explored in the novel. This novel comes highly recommended for readers who appreciate historical fiction rich with emotional depth and moral quandaries. Altsheler's masterful storytelling not only educates but also evokes empathy, allowing contemporary readers to connect to a pivotal moment in American history through the eyes of his richly drawn characters.

She risked everything to heal the wounded. Now she must fight to rebuild her own life.

    Shamrock Ridge, Colorado Territory, 1868.

Sarah Dunne arrives with little more than a worn carpetbag, a horse, and a past she cannot speak of. Trained as a doctor during the war, she treated the wounded until she was captured and held as a prisoner. Now barred from practicing medicine, she takes work as a nurse, knowing her skills far exceed the title she's been forced to accept.

The town is still recovering from the war, and Sarah is determined to stay quiet, keep her head down, and help where she can. But soon she is pulled into the lives of the people around her—a child in need of urgent care, and a local doctor who sees her as a threat.

As buried secrets begin to surface, Sarah must choose between silence and truth, safety and courage. Can she reclaim the life she once fought for, or will the past destroy her second chance?

Perfect for fans of clean historical romance and strong heroines, Sarah's story is a powerful tale of resilience, healing, and the hope found in unexpected places.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

It may well be that Empire has raised generations of its Nation’s kin abroad. And some, born abroad, adopted England as their home in preference to their own. For both this lure of ‘Home’ has nourished their ambition whilst all around them stories are to be found that they, with their unique outsider’s view, can create and deliver to our ears their literary masterpieces.

The Diary of a Nobody is an English comic novel written by the brothers George and Weedon Grossmith, with illustrations by the latter. It originated as an intermittent serial in Punch magazine in 1888–89 and first appeared in book form, with extended text and added illustrations, in 1892. The Diary records the daily events in the lives of a London clerk, Charles Pooter, his wife Carrie, his son William Lupin, and numerous friends and acquaintances over a period of 15 months.

Before their collaboration on the Diary, the brothers each pursued successful careers on the stage. George originated nine of the principal comedian roles in the Gilbert and Sullivan operas over 12 years from 1877 to 1889. He also established a national reputation as a piano sketch entertainer and wrote a large number of songs and comic pieces. Before embarking on his stage career, Weedon had worked as an artist and illustrator. The Diary was the brothers' only mature collaboration. Most of its humor derives from Charles Pooter's unconscious and unwarranted sense of his own importance, and the frequency with which this delusion is punctured by gaffes and minor social humiliations. In an era of rising expectations within the lowermiddle classes, the daily routines and modest ambitions described in the Diary were instantly recognized by its contemporary readers and provided later generations with a glimpse of the past that it became fashionable to imitate
