Summary

On Liberty by John Stuart Mill On Liberty is a philosophical essay by the English philosopher John Stuart Mill. Published in 1859, it applies Mill's ethical system of utilitarianism to society and state.

Mill suggests standards for the relationship between authority and liberty. He emphasizes the importance of individuality, which he considers prerequisite to the higher pleasures—the summum bonum of utilitarianism. Furthermore, Mill asserts that democratic ideals may result in the tyranny of the majority. Among the standards proposed are Mill's three basic liberties of individuals, his three legitimate objections to government intervention, and his two maxims regarding the relationship of the individual to society.

On Liberty was a greatly influential and well-received work. Some classical liberals and libertarians have criticized it for its apparent discontinuity[specify] with Utilitarianism, and vagueness in defining the arena within which individuals can contest government infringements on their personal freedom of action.

The ideas presented in On Liberty have remained the basis of much political thought. It has remained in print since its initial publication. A copy of On Liberty is passed to the president of the British Liberal Democrats as a symbol of office.

The Second World War was the most destructive conflict in history. It left Europe in ruins, its economies severely damaged and millions of its people facing malnutrition, its political systems shaken if not destroyed. Yet three decades later its economies had recovered; it largely appeared politically stable; its inhabitants generally were well housed and well fed. Then at the end of the 1980s, the postwar settlement disintegrated, and a new chapter in Europe's postwar history had begun. In this Very Short Introduction, Richard Bessel presents a clear, concise, informative account of Europe's history between the end of the Second World War and roughly the end of the twentieth century. He explores the conditions in Europe at the end of the war, how political life took shape and societies were rebuilt, the impressive economic recovery, the Cold War division, the end of empire, and European cultural life. Bessel discusses how we might understand the beginnings and endings of the postwar era, and emphasizes the importance of the experiences and actions of specific generations of Europeans.

In his twenties, Ed Garland came close to suicide but later discovered reading to help him cope with hearing loss and tinnitus. In this unique blend of memoir and literary criticism, right at the cutting edge of research drawing on both the literary and the medical worlds, the author reveals his own journey – through music then fiction – towards an understanding of sonic loss and, ultimately, towards healing. A genre-busting mix of literary criticism, sound studies and memoir, the essays explore what fictional sonic experiences can tell us about sound in everyday life. Written with humorous honesty about the ups and downs – mostly downs – of a young man's mental health, this is a thoughtful and original exploration of recovey, and of literature's ability to challenge preconceptions.
The English-language fiction classics of Wales explored include the work of Margiad Evans, Bernice Rubens, and Deborah Kay Davies. The international titles are by Annie Proulx and Samuel Beckett. Earwitness amplifies the rich connections between literature, auditory perception and mental wellbeing.

John Ruskin was a Victorian-era writer, art critic, and social thinker who wrote extensively on political economy. He was critical of the industrialization and capitalism that were taking hold in Britain during his time, and he believed that these developments were causing great harm to both the natural environment and human society.
Ruskin believed that the capitalist system was inherently flawed because it focused solely on maximizing profits and disregarded the well-being of workers, the environment, and society as a whole. He argued that the pursuit of wealth at all costs led to the exploitation of labor, the destruction of natural resources, and the degradation of art and culture.
In response to these problems, Ruskin advocated for a different economic system that was more in tune with the needs of people and the environment. He believed that the economy should be organized around the principles of social justice, sustainability, and community.
Ruskin's ideas were influential in the development of the Arts and Crafts movement, which sought to promote traditional crafts and design in opposition to the mass-produced goods of industrial capitalism. His critique of the capitalist system also influenced later socialist and environmental movements.
