Beschreibung

In "Traditions of Lancashire (Vol. 1 & 2)," John Roby meticulously captures the rich tapestry of folklore, customs, and oral histories that define Lancashire's unique cultural landscape. Through a blend of vivid storytelling and rigorous research, Roby navigates the region's myths and legends, presenting them in an engaging and accessible literary style. This compendium not only serves as a repository of local traditions but also contextualizes them within the broader spectrum of English cultural history, shedding light on the interplay between geography, identity, and folk narratives. John Roby, an influential figure in 19th-century literature, drew upon his extensive knowledge of local history and keen interest in folklore to compile this extensive work. His background in history and literature, coupled with his deep love for his native Lancashire, informed his approach to documenting these traditions. Roby's commitment to preserving the region's heritage is evident in his meticulous attention to detail and the affection with which he portrays local customs and tales. I recommend "Traditions of Lancashire" to scholars, historians, and anyone interested in the riveting intersection of folklore and community identity. This work not only enlightens readers about Lancashire's cultural beliefs but also invites them to appreciate the timelessness of oral traditions in shaping local ethos.

When Daniel Khalife escaped from Wandsworth in September 2023, the nation got a glimpse into the heart of the prison system, and what they saw there was chaos. This came as no surprise to Ian Acheson, who had spent years warning of the disasters to come.
Screwed is the inside story of the collapse of His Majesty's Prison Service, told by someone who had a front-row seat to it all. Acheson went from officer to Governor in less than a decade, and during that time he witnessed the uniformed organisation he was proud to serve crumble into lethal disarray. This uncompromisingly brutal account exposes the politics and operational decisions that have driven our prisons to a state where rats roam freely, prisoners are forced to use slop buckets, violence and intimidation are normalised and it is easier to get a bag of heroin than a bar of soap.

Concluding that the crisis is not unfixable, however, Acheson outlines a new corporate culture and mission that puts its faith in the officers who walk the landings every day: order restored, potential rescued, society safeguarded.

Transformative Experience by L.A. Paul challenges the foundations of how we make life's biggest decisions. From becoming a parent to changing careers—or even becoming a vampire in a thought experiment—some choices don’t just alter your circumstances; they change you. Paul introduces the concept of transformative experiences—decisions that are both epistemically transformative (you can’t know what they’re like until you live them) and personally transformative (they change your core values, preferences, or identity).

Traditional models of rational decision-making assume we can evaluate outcomes based on what we currently value. But what happens when the experience itself reshapes those values? If you can't imagine what the future will feel like, or if your future self values different things, how can you make a rational choice now?

Blending vivid examples, from parenthood to philosophical thought experiments, Paul explores the limits of foresight, the nature of self, and how we might embrace decision-making not as prediction—but as discovery. Transformative Experience is a groundbreaking work that forces us to rethink autonomy, authenticity, and the very meaning of rational choice.

The Kingdom of Kongo emerged as one of the most powerful and centralized states in Central Africa. Its origins can be traced back to the early Bantu migrations, which spread agriculture, ironworking, and complex social structures across the region. By the 14th century, various smaller chiefdoms in present-day Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo began to coalesce under a single authority, forming what would become the Kingdom of Kongo.
The region’s fertile lands and access to major rivers facilitated both agriculture and trade. Kongo’s early economy relied on the cultivation of crops such as millet, sorghum, and bananas, as well as the production of iron tools and weapons. The abundance of natural resources allowed the ruling elite to accumulate wealth and expand their influence. As trade networks developed, Kongo became a center of commerce, linking the interior regions of Central Africa with coastal markets.
Kongo's social and political organization was highly structured. At the top of the hierarchy was the king, known as the Manikongo, who ruled from the capital, Mbanza Kongo. The Manikongo exercised authority over provincial rulers, who governed different regions of the kingdom. This system allowed for centralized administration while also granting local leaders autonomy in managing their territories. The kingdom was further divided into districts and villages, with a bureaucratic structure that ensured tax collection, military organization, and judicial functions.
