  The legality of abortion in the United States is subject to individual state laws. In 1973, Roe v. Wade made the first abortion case to be taken to the Supreme Court, which had made it federally legal. In 1992, Roe was partially overturned by Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which stated that states cannot place legal restrictions posing an undue burden for "the purpose or effect of placing a substantial obstacle in the path of a woman seeking an abortion of a nonviable fetus." In 2022, both Roe and Casey were overturned, and abortions are now subject to regulations based on state laws once again. Individual states can regulate and limit the use of abortion, some of which already have through the use of "trigger laws", which made abortion illegal within the first and second trimesters when Roe was overturned. Eight states—Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, West Virginia and Wisconsin—still have pre-Roe abortion bans in their laws, which may be enforced too.

  After the Englishman Henry Hudson, under the aegis of the Dutch East India Company, sailed by Manhattan in 1609, he returned home with good news and bad news. Like the other explorers before him, he hadn’t been able to find a water route to the Orient. He had, however, returned with maps (confiscated by the English) and beaver pelts. With that, it became clear that the region around the bay that would take Hudson’s name was a very promising new territory for trade and settlement, which would become a serious bone of contention between the Dutch and the English for the rest of the century. In 1614, another Dutch East India merchant, Adriaen Block, entered through the narrows of the East River between Queens and Randall’s Island, a difficult and dangerous passage that later sank numerous ships and that Block named Hell’s Gate (Hellegat). The European world would know the name “Manhates” when Block returned to the Netherlands with new and improved maps.

  The Carolingian Empire, which existed from 800 to 888, was a dominant force in western and central Europe during the early Middle Ages. Founded by the Carolingian dynasty, this empire emerged from the Frankish kingdom, which had been ruled by this lineage since 751 and included control over the Lombards in Italy starting in 774. The empire's significance was amplified when Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne, the Frankish king, as emperor in Rome on Christmas Day in 800, marking a pivotal moment in the attempt to reestablish a western counterpart to the Roman Empire. This event not only solidified Charlemagne's power but also laid the groundwork for what would eventually become the Holy Roman Empire. 
  At its zenith, the Carolingian Empire stretched across a vast expanse, covering approximately 1,112,000 square kilometers (429,000 square miles) and supporting a population estimated between 10 to 20 million people. Charlemagne's reign was characterized by military conquests, administrative reforms, and cultural revival, known as the Carolingian Renaissance, which fostered the preservation and promotion of learning and the arts. 
  However, the empire faced challenges after the death of Emperor Louis the Pious in 840. A civil war erupted among his heirs, leading to the Treaty of Verdun in 843, which partitioned the empire into three distinct kingdoms. Although one monarch was still recognized as emperor, his authority was significantly limited, confining his power mainly to his own realm. This division undermined the unity that Charlemagne had worked hard to establish.
