Synopsis

In "The Mountains of California," John Muir eloquently captures the breathtaking beauty and intricate ecosystems of the Sierra Nevada. Through lyrical prose and vivid descriptions, Muir melds scientific observations with romantic imagery, reflecting the transcendentalist ideals of nature as a spiritual sanctuary. This work comprises a rich tapestry of Muir's explorations, meticulous sketches, and photographs, making it a seminal text in American natural literature. The book is not merely a guide to California's majestic landscapes, but a profound meditation on humanity's relationship with nature, calling for a reverence and stewardship of the wilderness that would resonate through the conservation movements that followed. John Muir, often hailed as the "Father of the National Parks," was deeply influenced by his Scottish upbringing and the profound sense of wilderness found in the American West. His passionate advocacy for the preservation of natural landscapes stemmed from a lifelong commitment to environmental conservation, shaped by personal experiences and philosophical beliefs that emphasize the intrinsic value of nature. This background informed his explorations, allowing him to approach the natural world with both wonder and scientific curiosity, culminating in this landmark work. Diverticulitis and diverticular disease are conditions that affect the digestive system, specifically the colon. The colon is a crucial part of the digestive tract, where the body absorbs nutrients and water from food. Diverticulosis, the precursor to diverticulitis, occurs when small, bulging pouches, known as diverticula, form in the walls of the colon. These pouches develop when weak spots in the colon’s muscular layer give way under pressure, creating pockets where waste can accumulate. While diverticulosis is common, especially in individuals over the age of 40, it often goes unnoticed because it doesn’t typically cause symptoms.
However, when one or more of these pouches becomes inflamed or infected, it leads to diverticulitis. Diverticulitis can cause significant pain, particularly in the lower left side of the abdomen, and may be accompanied by fever, nausea, and changes in bowel habits, such as diarrhea or constipation. The severity of diverticulitis can vary, ranging from mild cases that can be treated with antibiotics and dietary changes to severe cases that may require hospitalization or surgery.
The causes of diverticulitis are still not fully understood, but several factors are believed to contribute to its development. One of the most significant factors is a low-fiber diet, which can lead to constipation and increased pressure within the colon. Other risk factors include aging, obesity, lack of physical activity, smoking, and certain medications, such as steroids or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Genetic predisposition may also play a role in the development of diverticular disease.

Shortlisted for the 2016 Wales Book of the Year: The Open University in Wales Creative Non-Fiction Award
'Eluned Gramich has written the perfect essay - a minutely detailed yet nuanced evocation of place and personalities that is full of ecologically precise imagery and is as attentive to the Japanese language as it is to Hokkaidan landscape.' – Mark Cocker
As precise and nuanced as Japanese calligraphy, this memoir of the author's stay on the remote Hokkaido island in the far north of Japan, has at its heart the mountain, Yotei-san, the region's iconic equivalent to Mount Fuji. As much about learning a language (with connotations of 'reading' a wild landscape) as it is about nature, this dignified and nuanced work evokes what is cultured and cultivated, and yet also honours the wild; the untranslatable. With its themes of seasonal transformation, the peripheral, folklore, loneliness and learning to belong, this work takes a personal philosophical stance in relation to the centre and the periphery.
'"Eluned Gramich" is a name to hear time and again in the future. [This writing] is as good as we the jurors have ever read... short but perfectly formed... absolutely perfect.' – Justin Albert
'Quite beautiful. [The author encounters a culture that is completely alien] and she does it with a poet's eye... precisely and vitally. She reads this unfamiliarity with all her imaginative nerve-endings open: the effect is quite remarkable...' – Tony Brown
'Most rewarding is the philosophical approach... [Gramich's] embracing of... cultural multiplicity, fluidity and adaptability... suits perfectly the changing boundaries of our modern world.' – Wales Arts Review

Two leaders of the National Park Service provide a front-row seat to the disastrous impact of partisan politics over the past fifty years—and offer a bold vision for the parks’ future.

The US National Parks, what environmentalist and historian Wallace Stegner called America’s “best idea,” are under siege. Since 1972, partisan political appointees in the Department of the Interior have offered two conflicting views of the National Park Service (NPS): one vision emphasizes preservation and science-based decision-making, and another prioritizes economic benefits and privatization. These politically driven shifts represent a pernicious, existential threat to the very future of our parks.

For the past fifty years, brothers Jonathan B. and T. Destry Jarvis have worked both within and outside NPS as leaders and advocates. National Parks Forever interweaves their two voices to show how our parks must be protected from those who would open them to economic exploitation, while still allowing generations to explore and learn in them. Their history also details how Congress and administration appointees have used budget and staffing cuts to sabotage NPS’s ability to manage the parks and even threatened their existence. Drawing on their experience, Jarvis and Jarvis make a bold and compelling proposal: that it is time for NPS to be removed from the Department of the Interior and made an independent agency, similar to the Smithsonian Institution, giving NPS leaders the ability to manage park resources and plan our parks’ protection, priorities, and future.
