Richard Pryor's early life was far from ordinary as he grew up in a brothel run by his grandmother, where his mother worked as a prostitute. He was also sexually abused at the age of seven and later expelled from school at 14.
Pryor served in the U.S. Army, but spent most of his time in military prison for his involvement in an incident where he and other black soldiers assaulted a white soldier who laughed at racially charged scenes in a film.
