Beschreibung

John Muir made four trips to Alaska, as far as Unalaska and Barrow. Muir, Mr. Young and a group of Native American Guides first traveled to Alaska in 1879 and were the first Euro-Americans to explore Glacier Bay. Muir Glacier was later named after him. He traveled into British Columbia a third of the way up the Stikine River, likening its Grand Canyon to "a Yosemite that was a hundred miles long". Muir recorded over 300 glaciers along the river's course. He returned for further explorations in southeast Alaska in 1880 and in 1881 was with the party that landed on Wrangel Island on the USS Corwin and claimed that island for the United States. He documented this experience in journal entries and newspaper articles—later compiled and edited into his book The Cruise of the Corwin. In 1888 after seven years of managing the Strentzel fruit ranch in Alhambra Valley, California, his health began to suffer. He returned to the hills to recover, climbing Mount Rainier in Washington and writing Ascent of Mount Rainier. If your mom is dead, is she still your mom? At twenty-five—nearly two decades after losing her mother to breast cancer as a little girl—an accident on a downtown street unleashes startling emotional reactions in Peg Conway, and this question starts to percolate. She comes to understand what she’s experiencing as long-buried childhood grief, and as she marries and becomes a mother herself, Peg’s intense feelings challenge her to offer herself compassion. Gradually she confronts how growing up surrounded by silence in a family that moved on from sorrow had caused her to suppress her mother’s memory for far too long. Ultimately, after excavating all the layers, Peg finds her mom again, and in the process discovers that truth, no matter how painful, heals.

‘I was asked the other day what I thought the hardest part of parenting was. I’d have to say that it’s definitely the kids.’
TikTok sensation Clara Batten has dedicated the last few years to seeking the answer to one of life’s most crucial questions:
Is it possible to raise and nurture two small humans without losing your bloody mind?
The good news is, now she’s found (some of) the answers and is sharing her secrets with the rest of us! In this riotous book, Clara reveals:when it’s acceptable to buy your kids lunch from a kebab shop.why a jar of pickled herrings from Waitrose is the ultimate guilty pleasure, nay necessity, for a sleep-deprived parent.how to finally pursue your acting ambitions in your forties (despite a toddler sh*tting on the stairs during a self-tape audition).
Most importantly, Clara shows us that no matter how much we adore our little treasures, life isn’t just about their A, B and bloody Cs.
In her latest work, GIN AND PHONICS, Clara Batten humorously delves into the intricacies of long-term family relationships. This new autobiography, with its candid take on marriage and parenting, is a top pick for readers.
For fans of Miranda Hart (I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest with You), Dawn French (The Twat Files), Crystal Hefner (Only Say Good Things), Katy Weitz (Undercover Copper), and Davinia Taylor (It's Not A Diet).
