Beschreibung

In "Beacon Lights of History: American Founders," John Lord presents a compelling exploration of the lives and legacies of key figures who shaped the American nation. He writes with a narrative style that seamlessly blends biographical details with moral reflection, situating each founder's contributions within the broader tapestry of American political and social evolution. This work is not merely a chronology of events; rather, it is a thoughtful commentary on the ethical dimensions of leadership and the ideologies that drove these historical figures, all delivered in Lord's eloquent prose that resonates with clarity and insight. John Lord, a 19th-century historian and theologian, utilized his extensive knowledge of classical philosophy and American history to create a narrative that is as educational as it is engaging. His background in theological studies imbues his writing with a moral urgency, prompting readers to reflect on the virtues and vices that underpin the American experiment. Lord'Äôs passion for history, combined with his belief in the influence of great individuals, informs this powerful examination of America'Äôs birth and the ideals upon which it was founded. "Beacon Lights of History: American Founders" is an essential read for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of the formative figures of American history. It challenges readers to contemplate the values these leaders espoused and their relevance in contemporary society. Lord'Äôs insightful analysis invites us to reflect on the foundations of our nation and the enduring legacy of its founders, making this work a significant contribution to both historical literature and moral philosophy.

There once may have been 250,000 miles of stone walls in America's Northeast, stretching farther than the distance to the moon. And even though most are crumbling today, they contain a magnificent scientific and cultural story.

Stone walls tell nothing less than the story of how New England was formed, and in Robert Thorson's hands they live and breathe. Millions of years ago, New England's stones belonged to ancient mountains thrust up by prehistoric collisions between continents. Buried again over centuries by forest and soil buildup, the stones gradually worked their way back to the surface, only to become impediments to the farmers cultivating the land in the eighteenth century, who piled them into "linear landfills," a place to hold the stones. Usually the biggest investment on a farm, often exceeding that of the land and buildings combined, stone walls became a defining element of the Northeast's landscape, and a symbol of the shift to an agricultural economy.

Stone walls layer time like Russian dolls, their smallest elements reflecting the longest spans, and Thorson urges us to study them, for each stone has its own story. Linking geological history to the early American experience, Stone by Stone presents a fascinating picture of the land the Pilgrims settled, allowing us to see and understand it with new eyes.

In December 1937, the Chinese capital, Nanjing, falls and the Japanese army unleash an orgy of torture, murder, and rape. Over the course of six weeks, hundreds of thousands of civilians and prisoners of war are killed. At the very onset of the atrocities, the Danish supervisor at a cement plant just outside the city, 26-year-old Bernhard Arp Sindberg, opens the factory gates and welcomes in 10,000 Chinese civilians to safety. He becomes an Asian equivalent of Oskar Schindler, the savior of Jews in the Holocaust.

This biography follows Sindberg from his childhood and on his first adventures as a sailor and a Foreign Legionnaire to the 104 days as a rescuer of thousands of helpless men, women, and children in the darkest hour of the Sino-Japanese War. After his remarkable achievement, he receded back into obscurity, spending decades at sea and becoming a naturalized American citizen, before dying of old age in Los Angeles in 1983.

The book sets the record straight by providing the first complete account of Sindberg's life in English. What emerges is the surprising tale of a person who was average in every respect but rose to the occasion when faced with unimaginable brutality, discovering an inner strength and courage that transformed him into one of the great humanitarian figures of the twentieth century and an inspiration for our modern age.

The Second Coming of Napoleon -...

The Battle of Waterloo, fought on June 18, 1815, is widely regarded as one of history’s most decisive conflicts. It marked the end of Napoleon Bonaparte’s reign and the beginning of a new European order. However, had the battle played out differently—had Napoleon emerged victorious—France and the world would have been set on an entirely new course.
A French victory at Waterloo was not an impossibility. Napoleon, despite being outnumbered, was still a military genius who had orchestrated countless triumphs before. His strategy depended on dividing and defeating the Anglo-Allied and Prussian forces separately before they could fully unite. For much of the battle, the French had the upper hand, with their artillery hammering British lines and their cavalry sowing chaos among enemy ranks.
One key turning point was the delayed arrival of Marshal Grouchy and his troops. Had Grouchy pursued and effectively neutralized the Prussian forces under Blücher, Napoleon would have been able to concentrate his full strength on Wellington’s forces, likely forcing them into retreat. With the British lines collapsing and no reinforcements arriving, the battlefield could have been transformed from a site of French defeat into one of Napoleon’s most remarkable victories.
