Synopsis

The church has too often lost its way in reading the Old Testament for lack of sound principles of interpretation. When careless habits get us off track, we can lose sight of what the Bible is really saying, derailing our own spiritual growth and even risking discredit to God's word.
We need a consistent approach to give us confidence as faithful interpreters. In Wisdom for Faithful Reading, the trusted Old Testament scholar John Walton lays out his tried-and-true best practices developed over four decades in the classroom. His principles are memorable, practical, and enlightening, including:

- The Bible is written for us, but not to us.
- Reading the Bible instinctively is not reliable and risks imposing a foreign perspective on the text.
- More important than what the characters do is what the narrator does with the characters and what God is doing through the characters.
- Not everything has a "biblical view."
Along with identifying common missteps, Walton's insights point the way to stay focused on what the Old Testament text communicated to its original audience—and what it has to say for us today. When we submit ourselves to be accountable to the authors' intentions we experience the true authority of Scripture, and faithful reading fuels a faithful life.
Using numerous examples across the breadth of the Old Testament and its genres, Walton equips thoughtful Christians to read more knowledgeably, to pay attention to God's plans and purposes, to recognize good interpretations, and to truly live in light of Scripture. You may never read the Old Testament the same way again.

Josh Barnes was just nine when he received an invaluable gift from God: the ability to play guitar to the utmost perfection. He could recognize each note and play every chord to create the most beautiful melodies ever heard. In no time, he became the pride of his hometown, and many believed he was on the road to becoming the youngest and most talented guitarist of his time.
However, his ambitions were thwarted when his niece, Elena, was diagnosed with cancer. Losing all hope, the only way he could ensure her survival and his brother's happiness was to make a deal with the Devil. The catch? He had to give up God's gift and never play his guitar again.
Thus, the once-celebrated young talent of Comanche had to choose the dreary life of a truck driver, giving up his gift and his dreams so that his niece would get cured. But much to his disappointment, after being cured, Elena turned out to be quite selfish and caused much trouble to their family.
The roads ahead of Josh were different from what he had dreamt of, but Josh refused to give up. Will he be able to fulfill all the conditions, or will Elena's temper drive him to break that deal?

    I'm shocked.
My dad just told me that my mother died.
    DIED.
He should know that mothers don't die until they're old grandmothers. Is he lying to me? Is she dead or did she run away from me because of our fight? I miss my mom. My heart hurts. This can't be happening.
What am I going to do without my mom? How do I survive without my mom?
Dad says that I must move in with him, his wife, and his two kids. This can't be happening. And what about my art show? Mom encouraged me to paint. I can't do my art show without her! What am I going to do?
If my mom died, God must be punishing me. Or maybe he's not as good as everyone says.
Pastor Will says that God values my tears. I can't stop crying, but God hasn't given me my mom back yet. Maybe Pastor Will has been tricked and God isn't real, after all. c
Kirkus review says, "Steeped in Christianity, Templeton's story is likely to provide deep comfort to those who observe the faith and would prove an excellent resource for Christian youth groups. This Christian-centered story deftly limns the conflicting emotions of kids who have experienced loss."

Though the words "foster care" are not in the Bible, the act of caring for the vulnerable is clearly important to God. Perhaps nowhere is that kind of tender attention and care for the vulnerable more evident than in the act of fostering a child. But as foster parents pour themselves into the children God has called them to care for, they may find themselves feeling emptied, in need of being refreshed and reinvigorated for the day to come.

With sixty devotions written especially for foster parents by a foster parent, Filled offers a special boost of spiritual energy and encouragement particular to the unique joys and challenges faced by those who open their homes and hearts to kids in need of love. Each reading includes Scripture, a real-life anecdote from the author's experience as a foster parent, an explanation of the biblical text, and suggestions for continued reading.
