Summary

In "On The Border With Crook," John Gregory Bourke offers a compelling eyewitness account of the Indian Wars in the American West, specifically focusing on General George Crook's campaigns during the late 19th century. Bourke employs a vivid and engaging narrative style, blending meticulous observation with personal experience, bringing to life the tumultuous atmosphere of the borderlands. His work stands as both a historical document and a literary piece, richly detailing the complexities of U.S. military strategy, Native American resistance, and the challenging environment of the frontier. Bourke's unique perspective as a soldier and officer provides valuable insights into the cultural and political tensions of the era, situating the reader firmly in a pivotal period of American history. John Gregory Bourke was an army officer serving under General Crook, and his firsthand experiences with the Native American tribes and his interactions with fellow soldiers shaped his insightful analyses. Bourke's extensive background in ethnology and interest in indigenous cultures inform his writing, allowing him to convey both the brutality of warfare and a deeper understanding of Native American society and its struggles. His dual roles as both a participant and an observer render his account not only a military narrative but also a thoughtful reflection on the cultural conflicts of the time. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in American history, military strategy, and the intricacies of frontier life. Bourke's engaging prose and rich detail make this account accessible to both scholars and general readers alike, providing an essential window into the conflicts that shaped the American West. "On The Border With Crook" resonates today, as it invites contemplation on the legacy of these historical events and their enduring impact on contemporary society.

In Bonding with God, Victor Counted uses the attachment framework to explore how we develop psychological bonds with God, what sustains those bonds, and what can erode them, leading to a crisis of faith.

As we navigate questions of identity, meaning, and purpose, the role of faith in offering support and guidance becomes crucial. Yet the emotional and psychological aspects of religious experience are often overlooked. Counted fills this gap by showing how a caregiving faith can foster resilience and spiritual transformation.

Bonding with God is a fascinating read that challenges traditional notions of religion and spirituality and invites us to examine our own connections with God. It is a valuable resource for mental health professionals and students training for ministry or caring professions who seek to understand how individuals form, maintain, and navigate emotional bonds with God.

Counted's interdisciplinary approach, combining psychology and theology, makes this book an essential resource for anyone interested in the intricacies of human attachment and the power of faith to shape our lives.

Theodore Kaczynski, also known as the Unabomber, is a United States murderer, mathematician, and neo-Luddite social critic who carried out a campaign of mail bombings. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, where, as an intellectual child prodigy, he excelled academically from an early age.
A considerable amount of credible circumstantial evidence suggests that Kaczynski was the unwitting victim of top secret CIA-sponsored 'MK-ULTRA' mind-control experiments conducted at Harvard University from the fall of 1959 through the spring of 1962. Some experts suggest that these experiments may have been the cause of his emotional problems.
Kaczynski eventually received an undergraduate degree from Harvard University and earned a PhD in mathematics from the University of Michigan. He became an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley at age 25 but resigned two years later.
In 1971, he moved to a remote cabin without electricity or running water, in Lincoln, Montana, where he began to learn survival skills in an attempt to become self-sufficient.
He decided to start his bombing campaign after watching the wilderness around his home get destroyed by development.
From 1978 to 1995, Kaczynski sent 16 bombs to targets including universities and airlines, killing three people and injuring 23. Kaczynski sent a letter to The New York Times on April 24, 1995 and promised "to desist from terrorism" if the Times or The Washington Post published his manifesto. In his Industrial Society and Its Future (also called the "Unabomber Manifesto"), he argued that his bombings were extreme but necessary to attract attention to the erosion of human freedom necessitated by modern technologies requiring large-scale organization.
    included in this volume:
    -Unnamed Essay
    -When Non-Violence is Suicide
    -Hit Where It Hurts
-Industrial Society and Its Future (aka The Unabomber Manifesto)

In April 1865, Richmond fell to the Union army and Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to his Northern counterpart, Ulysses S. Grant, at the Appomattox Court House. But the Civil War was far from over.

Determined to keep Confederate dreams of secession alive, President Jefferson Davis and his cabinet fled the burning capital city. With Union troops in pursuit, the fugitives rallied loyalists across the South and made plans to escape to Cuba. In the aftermath of President Abraham Lincoln's assassination, a $100,000 bounty was placed on Davis's head. Finally captured in Irwinville, Georgia, the former US senator and secretary of war became a prisoner of the American government. The harsh treatment he received would inflame tensions between North and South for years to come.

Meticulously researched and brilliantly told, The Long Surrender brings these dramatic events to vivid, unforgettable life and paints a fascinating portrait of Davis, one of history's most enigmatic figures. By shining a light on this forgotten chapter of the Civil War, bestselling author Burke Davis examines the lasting impact of America's bloodiest conflict on the national character.
