Synopsis

From John Gray, bestselling author of Manchester Christmas and Chasing Manhattan, comes the third novel in a heartwarming trilogy full of charm, romance, and mystery.
Always blazing their own path, newly engaged couple Chase and Gavin decide to forego a typical American wedding, followed by a honeymoon in Italy. Instead, they'll spend the month of December in Rome with a local Italian family, learning the customs and exploring every romantic adventure they can find.
On a trip to the famed Colosseum, Chase and Gavin meet an elderly artist who offers them four riddles that he promises will unlock the most romantic places in all of Italy. As the couple deciphers each clue, they are taken from the canals of Venice to the Bridge of Sighs over the Tiber, to a monastery on the Island of Elba — meeting others who are struggling with secrets, love, and loss.  They encounter heart-pounding intrigue and old-world charm on the ancient streets of Rome, and discover that almost nothing is as it seems. Will Chase and Gavin make it to their wedding on Christmas Eve or will they forever find themselves Chasing Rome?

The setting is the Tower of London, and Thomas More awaits his execution. Looking for distraction from his predicament, More rereads Utopia, and becomes obsessed with the Utopian system of government of which he was so skeptical two decades earlier. His friends, Giles and Hythloday visit More a few days before his appointment with the executioner, and confess that they too, have recently been musing about life in the island nation. More compels his friends to return to Utopia in order to gather more information. Then, by leveraging their relationships with influential humanist colleagues, Giles and Hythloday will introduce the alternative system of governance to the people of Europe. Thirty days later, as the light of a full moon glistens on the River Thames below the London Bridge, More’s daughter collects her father’s severed head from the King’s guard, and Hythloday’s ship Dolfijn glides toward the river’s mouth on its way back to the New World island of Utopia.

Steve Donay lands on a planet that appears impossibly civilized: fertile fields, carefully tended homes, quiet cities, and people who never rush or argue. Everything works. Everything lasts. Yet nothing feels quite alive. Days pass without interruption, and the stillness begins to press on him. No one asks questions. No one explains. And no one seems surprised that he is there.
As Donay moves deeper into this world, the comfort becomes harder to resist. Food is abundant. Homes are welcoming. The people are beautiful, composed, and endlessly patient. But their calm conceals a choice that has already been made for most of the planet—a choice that traded urgency, growth, and struggle for permanence and certainty. Donay must decide whether to accept a future where nothing truly changes, or risk returning to a harsher life where desire, fear, and time still matter.
Richard S. Shaver was a prolific contributor to mid-century science fiction magazines, with stories appearing in Amazing Stories, Fantastic Adventures, and other influential pulp publications of the 1940s and 1950s. He is best known for his controversial “Shaver Mystery” cycle, which blended science fiction, mythology, and speculative anthropology into a shared narrative universe. Paradise Planet reflects Shaver’s recurring fascination with hidden civilizations, altered humanity, and the cost of engineered perfection.
