Synopsis

In "The Ancient Bronze Implements, Weapons, and Ornaments, of Great Britain and Ireland," John Evans meticulously explores the rich archaeological heritage of ancient Britain and Ireland, culminating in an extensive examination of bronze artifacts. His work is characterized by a rigorous scientific approach, combining meticulous cataloging with insightful analysis of the social and technological context of these implements. The book serves not only as a catalog but also as a synthesis of existing knowledge, reflecting the Victorian preoccupation with classification and the emerging field of archaeology during the 19th century. John Evans, a prominent British archaeologist and numismatist, was deeply influenced by the burgeoning interest in prehistoric cultures during his time, often drawing on his extensive travels through Europe. His keen eye for detail and commitment to empirical research helped him amass a wealth of information that would later contribute to this seminal work. Evans's professional affiliations and correspondence with contemporaries in the field provided additional insights, making his analysis not just personal conjecture but a collective endeavor in understanding our past. This book is an invaluable resource for historians, archaeologists, and enthusiasts of ancient cultures. It invites readers to delve into the nuances of early human craftsmanship and its cultural significance. Evans's thoroughness ensures that both scholars and laypersons alike will find enlightenment in the intricate details of these ancient artifacts, making it a cornerstone for anyone interested in the fascinating story of bronze in the British Isles.

Harpers Ferry, still perhaps best known as Harper’s Ferry, is one of the most unique places in American history. Situated near the confluence of the Shenandoah River and Potomac River, it is one of the few places in the country that practically borders three states, and the location ultimately compelled George Washington himself to place a federal armory and arsenal there. Although Harpers Ferry was always a small, sleepy town, its industrial capacity to manufacture weaponry for the U.S. Army made it important, and ultimately ensured its legacy thanks to John Brown’s raid. In the wake of the Civil War, Harpers Ferry became more of a tourist destination, and it has since become a historic district under the auspices of the National Park Service. The restoration has also ensured that it became a living history museum of sorts, renovated to appear as it did historically while educating people about the important events in American history that happened there.
Along with Jamestown and Yorktown, Colonial Williamsburg is known today as part of the Historic Triangle of Virginia, but all three of these old Virginian sites are known for vastly different reasons. While Yorktown was the scene of the final climactic battle of the American Revolution and Jamestown is remembered for being the first English settlement to survive in Virginia, Colonial Williamsburg is now best known as a bridge to the past. As fate would have it, a major initiative during the 20th century would restore Williamsburg to a place of prominence, literally. In one of America’s most ambitious building projects, efforts were undertaken to reconstruct the main parts of Colonial Williamsburg and restore it to a more original appearance, whether it was constructing new buildings with the old architecture or renovating colonial buildings.

There is no death in the Osirian religion, only decay and change, and periodic renewal; only evolution and transformation in the domain of matter and the transubstantiation into spirit. In the so-called death of Osiris it is rebirth, not death, exactly the same as in the changes of external nature. At the close of the day the solar orb went down and left the sun god staring blankly in the dark of death. Taht the moon god met him in Amenta with the eye of Horus as the light the was to illuminate the darkness of the subterranean world. –from “Egyptian Book of the Dead and the Mysteries of Amenta” It goes unappreciated by modern Egyptologists, but it is embraced by those who savor the concept of a “hidden history” of humanity, and those who approach all human knowledge from the perspective of the esoteric. Gerard Massey’s massive Ancient Egypt: The Light of the World–first published in 1907 and the crowning achievement of the self-taught scholar–redefines the roots of Christianity via Egypt, proposing that Egyptian mythology was the basis for Jewish and Christian beliefs. Here, Cosimo proudly presents Book 4 of Ancient Egypt, in which Massey discusses the Egyptian Book of the Dead as the “pre-Christian word of God,” and explores the idea that Amenta, the threshold to the Egyptian underworld, is the first overt expression of a human desire for a noncorporeal afterlife. Massey goes on to connect the “mystery of the mummy” to “the mystery of the Christ” by likening the Christian dogma of physical resurrection to the Egyptian impetus for mummification. Peculiar and profound, this work will intrigue and delight readers of history, religion, and mythology. British author GERALD MASSEY (1828-1907) published works of poetry, spiritualism, Shakespearean criticism, and theology, but his best-known works are in the realm of Egyptology, including A Book of the Beginnings and The Natural Genesis.

The year is 1865. 34-year-old Annie, freshly married, sets sail for New Zealand where she will serve as a helpmeet for her second husband, Fred. They live in Christchurch until they can build their house in the sheep-farming Canterbury High Country. Soon, Lady Annie Barker is tending to dogs and chickens, learning how to boil potatoes and galloping side-saddle on her horse through the fresh, miasma-free air. Just when the newlyweds begin to feel settled, they are caught in a great snowstorm, and swindled in a land deal.
This is two books in one: Station Life in New Zealand (1870) and Station Amusements (1873).
