Synopsis

In "General Robert E. Lee: The True Story of the Infamous 'Marble Man,'" the complexities of iconic figures within the turbulent American Civil War era are examined with a lens both critical and compassionate. This anthology assembles a range of narrative styles including biography, historical analysis, and reflective essays, capturing the multifaceted portrait of Robert E. Lee. The collection transcends simple biography by juxtaposing various interpretations and narratives, thereby peeling away the layers of myth surrounding Lee's persona, often referred to as the 'Marble Man.' From poignant reflections to rigorous historical critiques, the anthology offers a comprehensive and nuanced exploration of a controversial figure. The contributing authors, including John Esten Cooke, a distinguished writer of historical biographies, and Robert E. Lee himself, provide a rich tapestry of perspectives. While Cooke's writings add literary elegance and a deep-rooted understanding of Southern culture, Lee's own correspondence and reflections provide an introspective glimpse into the mindset of a Confederate leader. This collection aligns with pivotal moments in Southern historiography while offering insights into 19th-century societal tensions, thus contributing to a broader understanding of this tumultuous era. Together, these voices create a dialogic approach, bridging historical gaps and questioning longstanding narratives. This volume is an essential read for historians, literary enthusiasts, and those seeking to engage with complex historical narratives. With its multiplicity of voices and perspectives, the anthology provides an invaluable educational opportunity, offering breadth and depth that stimulate thoughtful discourse. An unexpected, poignant, and personal account of loving and losing pets, exploring the singular bonds we have with our companion animals, and how to grieve them once they’ve passed.
E.B. Bartels has had a lot of pets—dogs, birds, fish, tortoises. As varied a bunch as they are, they’ve taught her one universal truth: to own a pet is to love a pet, and to own a pet is also—with rare exception—to lose that pet in time.
But while we have codified traditions to mark the passing of our fellow humans, most cultures don’t have the same for pets. Bartels takes us from Massachusetts to Japan, from ancient Egypt to the modern era, in search of the good pet death. We meet veterinarians, archaeologists, ministers, and more, offering an idiosyncratic, inspiring array of rituals—from the traditional (scattering ashes, commissioning a portrait), to the grand (funereal processions, mausoleums), to the unexpected (taxidermy, cloning). The central lesson: there is no best practice when it comes to mourning your pet, except to care for them in death as you did in life, and find the space to participate in their end as fully as you can.
Punctuated by wry, bighearted accounts of Bartels’s own pets and their deaths, Good Grief is a cathartic companion through loving and losing our animal family.

Welcome to the house of fun.
It's the early 1980s and Fiona Neary and her family have recently moved back from England to the family farm. Fiona's huge-hearted mum decides to take in foster children – a decision that will change all their lives.
Over the next decade, a procession of faces passes through the house. Every child has their own story, and each story claims a little piece of Fiona's heart. Some stay a few weeks; some months, and then years. All these children, as well as Fiona and her family, must pass through a chaotic system: where a judge's decision can alter a child's life, for better or worse; where emergency placements can break up siblings; where the foster family are often left in the dark and with little back-up.
Filled with pathos and humour, Parcels in the Post is both a memoir of a loving household and snapshot of the fostering system in Ireland, from someone at the very heart of it all.

A middle aged author declining in popularity. An up and coming literary agent with an eye for genius. A partnership that would forge a prodigious legacy in American literature.
Henry James was a middle-aged author who had established himself on a transatlantic scale when he employed James Brand Pinker as his literary agent in 1898. The changing preferences of a growing audience of readers along with James’s self-defeating practice of shifting from publisher to publisher, rather than adhering to the trade courtesy of remaining loyal to one house, were making the author’s efforts to keep his work in print increasingly difficult; bringing Pinker, who managed the literary business of over 100 authors including Stephen Crane, H.G. Wells, Joseph Conrad, and Jack London, into the picture made it possible for James to maintain a presence before the reading public to an extent that would have been impossible without the agent’s assistance.
Pinker’s involvement was vital to the continuance of James’s career, as his later works and the New York Edition proved difficult material to place. The agent’s role as the mediator of conflict between the commercial writer and literary artist, positions that James had difficulty reconciling, had considerable influence on the shape of James’s later career and thus the way in which the author is remembered; James’s legacy is therefore clearly tied to Pinker’s efforts.
Using correspondence between Pinker, James, and the primary publishers of James’s material from 1898 until Pinker’s death in 1922, along with secondary works addressing the agent’s endeavors during this period, this volume demonstrates the link between Pinker’s work and James’s continued presence in print, both during the author’s lifetime and after his death.
