  Veteran Court

  A new and special court system set up in over 20 jurisdictions around the country now gives veterans a chance at treatment and not simply punishment for their crimes. Like drug courts that began in the 1980s, they’re based on the idea of treating defendants for underlying problems in order to prevent future criminal activity. Veterans in this system agree to plead guilty to their crimes in exchange for mental health counseling, drug addiction treatment and strict monthly court appearances. 
  While the courts handle some serious felonies it will not take murder, attempted murder, rape, sexual assault or domestic violence. Dan May, a district attorney explains “some of that isn’t even going to be related to PTSD, quite frankly. But that’s just too spectacular to be in this program.” 
  While the courts have yet to be studied recidivism seems to be low; the first court in Buffalo has had 22 veterans graduate from its program, and, so far, none have committed new crimes.

  To paraphrase the note from the translator, The Celebrated Crimes of Alexandre Dumas père was not written for children. The novelist has spared no language—has minced no words—to describe violent scenes of violent times.In this, the ninth of the series, Dumas uses the lives of two women, Angelique-Louise de Guerchi and Josephine-Charlotte Boullenois, and the men who, to put it bluntly, control their lives. Most of the book is taken up with the doings and duels of those men, which ultimately lead to the untimely deaths of the two women. The agent of those deaths, the widow and midwife La Constantin, hardly appears in the story at all!The place is Paris; the time is the period of civil war in France known as the Fronde. It is a time when power has fragmented; even a noble can find himself in the power of a commoner, and justice is a rare commodity. Dumas himself warns us not to seek the records of these cases, for this was not an age much concerned with the lives of more or less ordinary people; the great had bigger fish to fry. He lays no great stress upon it, but there is a very clear indictment of the society of that time, and a very clear portrait of the helplessness of women of the day.Enjoy!

  This is the first biography of Rt. Hon. William Wedgwood Benn DSO, DFC, first Viscount Stansgate, cabinet minister under MacDonald and Attlee, Air Commodore with active service in both World Wars, defector from the Liberals to Labour over his dispute with Lloyd George, and father of Tony Benn. Benn served in the army and RAF during the First World War (when he took part in the first parachute drop behind enemy lines at night) and in the Second World War he reached the rank of acting Air Commodore). His eldest son Michael, heir to the viscountcy, died on active service with the RAF, leaving his second son Tony to inherit the title and a seat in the House of Lords. Before his death, Tony Benn gave extensive interviews for this book. His brother, David has also provided interviews and material, as have other members of the family including Stephen Benn (now the third Viscount Stansgate). Extensive paperwork left by William Wedgwood Benn (now in the Parliamentary Archives) including his diary and unfinished, unpublished autobiography were all utilised in the construction of this biography. Alun Wyburn-Powell has managed to construct a biographical study of real force, weaving together snippets from Benn's own private papers with insights from his family and colleagues in order to create an authentic impression of Benn and the times in which he lived.

  ‘Ndrangheta: The History of...

  The word “mafia,” Sicilian in origin,[1] is synonymous with Italy, but Italy is home to several different mafias, with three being particularly notorious. While the Cosa Nostra of western Sicily is the most infamous, other powerful groups include the ferocious ‘Ndrangheta of Calabria and the Camorra, the third-largest mafia, which is active in Naples and the Campania region.[2] A “mafia” is loosely defined as a criminal organization that is interested in social, economic and political power, combining elements of a traditional secret society with those of a business, but further levels of nuance are necessary in order to understand these groups.[3] In a general sense, this is because each mafia creates a myth about the development of the organization, which becomes like an unquestionable truth. In essence, part of what makes its members so completely loyal to it is also what makes outsiders so utterly afraid of it.[4]    
  	The ‘Ndrangheta (pronounced an-drang-et-ah) is a close neighbor of the Cosa Nostra and currently considered the most powerful (and difficult to spell) criminal organization in Italy. The ‘Ndrangheta is centered around Calabria, the most southwestern region of Italy, almost touching the Sicilian city of Messina. Though it began as far back as the late 19th century, it was not until the 1950s that the ‘Ndrangheta started to spread its tentacles throughout Italy and then across the entire globe, forming an empire that now ranges from Australia and Turkey to Chile to Canada.  
  	The fact that the ‘Ndrangheta is overshadowed by the Sicilian Cosa Nostra, as well as by the Neapolitan mafia, the Camorra, allowed it to grow and develop outside of the public eye. For years, people actually considered the Calabrian mafia to be part of the Cosa Nostra as a mere appendage, rather than its own entity.
