Synopsis

In "Discourses on Satire and on Epic Poetry," John Dryden presents a fascinating exploration of two significant literary forms that shaped the 17th-century English literary landscape. This collection emphasizes the interplay between satire and epic poetry, dissecting their structures, artistic merits, and moral implications. Dryden's prose is characterized by its rich rhetorical devices and insightful criticism, situated within the context of Restoration England, where he navigates the complexities of genre and societal commentary in the wake of political upheaval and literary innovation. His analytical approach reveals both the potential and limitations of satire, paralleling the grandeur and gravity associated with epic poetry. John Dryden (1631-1700), a prolific poet, critic, and playwright, is often regarded as the father of English literary criticism. His lifetime encompassed the tumult of the English Civil War and the subsequent Restoration, which undeniably influenced his perspectives on art and governance. His experiences as a court poet and his engagement with contemporary literary debates provided him with a unique lens through which to evaluate the functions of satire and epic in shaping public discourse and moral thought. "Discourses on Satire and on Epic Poetry" is essential reading for scholars and enthusiasts alike, offering profound insights that resonate beyond its historical context. Dryden's critical examination encourages readers to appreciate the intricacies of genre while reflecting on their relevance in modern literary and cultural dialogues. This work not only enhances one's understanding of Dryden's contributions but also invites contemplation on the enduring power of satire and epic forms.

The first Cold War was a struggle between capitalism and communism; most Western politicians and policymakers imagine the new one to be a struggle between democracy and autocracy. Russia's World Order explains that in Russian eyes, the conflict is about something very different: it is a fight between two incompatible visions of where history is leading.

Russia's World Order describes the civilizational theory that has come to dominate Russian official discourse, and that has come to dominate Russian official discourse and that is being used to justify its clashes with the West. Whereas the West promotes a vision of history that drives all nations toward convergence on a single model, Russia's political leaders increasingly portray the world as consisting of numerous distinct civilizations, each diverging toward its own destination. The Russian state portrays itself as defending the right of all civilizations to chart their own independent path and is having some success in using this logic to win allies.

Paul Robinson recounts how ideas of inevitable convergence once dominated Russian thought as well but were gradually pushed out by civilizational theories. He outlines where these theories came from, what they propose, and how they became popular. Russia's World Order thereby reveals the true nature of today's New Cold War.

Born in Matagorda, Texas, in 1855, Charlie Siringo went on his first cattle drive at age twelve and spent two decades living his boyhood dream as a cowboy. As the dangerous, lucrative "beeves" business boomed, Siringo drove longhorn steers north to the burgeoning Midwest Plains states' cattle and railroad towns, crossing paths with such legendary figures as Billy the Kid and Bat Masterson. In his early thirties he joined the Pinkerton Detective Agency's Denver office, using a variety of aliases to investigate violent labor disputes and infiltrate outlaw gangs.

Siringo's landmark 1885 autobiography, A Texas Cowboy, helped make the lowly cowboy a heroic symbol of the American West. His later memoir, A Cowboy Detective, influenced early hard-boiled crime novelists for whom the detective story was really the cowboy story in an urban setting. Sadly sued into debt by the Pinkertons, who were determined to prevent their sources and methods from being revealed, Siringo eventually sold his beloved New Mexico ranch and moved to Los Angeles, where he advised Hollywood filmmakers, and especially actor William S. Hart, on their early 1920s Westerns.

In old age, Charlie Siringo was called "Ulysses of the Wild West" for the long journey he took across the western frontier. Son of the Old West brings him and his legendary world vividly to life.
