Summary

An explosion of violence sends British sleuth Patrick Dawlish on the trail of a criminal empire that threatens the very foundations of crown and country.   Recruited by Scotland Yard to secretly investigate the ever-expanding substance abuse among London’s upper echelons, Patrick Dawlish is once again ready to risk life and limb doing a job that isn’t his. With two nightclubs to focus on, he gets entrée into one of the suspected drug dens when he offers to meet a friend’s former fiancée, actress Chloë Farrimond.   When his meeting is highjacked by armed goons, Dawlish narrowly escapes, learning that the whole murderous affair was set off by the search for a set of silver-backed hair brushes, a gift from Chloë to her former love. Dawlish could never expect that such a simple accessory could draw a secret organization out of the shadows with machine guns blazing—in a spree of crime and corruption on a level never before seen . . .

"The Final Problem" is a short story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featuring his detective character Sherlock Holmes. It was first published in Strand Magazine under the title "The Adventure of the Final Problem" in December 1893. It appears in book form as part of the collection The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. This story, set in 1891, introduced Holmes's archenemy, the criminal mastermind Professor James Moriarty. Conan Doyle later ranked "The Final Problem" fourth on his personal list of the twelve best Holmes stories.
Holmes arrives at Dr. John Watson's residence one evening in a somewhat agitated state and with grazed and bleeding knuckles. Much to Watson's surprise, he had apparently escaped three separate murder attempts that day after a visit from Professor Moriarty, who warned Holmes to withdraw from his pursuit of justice against him to avoid any regrettable outcome. First, just as he was turning a street corner, a cab suddenly rushed towards him and Holmes just managed to leap out of the way in time. Second, while Holmes was walking along the street, a brick fell from the roof of a house, just missing the detective. He then called the police to search the whole area but could not prove that it was anything other than an accident. Finally, on his way to Watson's house, he was attacked by a thug armed with a cosh. Holmes managed to overcome his assailant and handed him to the police but admitted that there was virtually no hope of proving that the man was in the employ of the criminal mastermind.

The first English-language story collection from "one of Iran's most important living fiction writers" (Guardian)

In Seasons of Purgatory, the fantastical and the visceral merge in tales of tender desire and collective violence, the boredom and brutality of war, and the clash of modern urban life and rural traditions. Mandanipour, banned from publication in his native Iran, vividly renders the individual consciousness in extremis from a variety of perspectives: young and old, man and woman, conscript and prisoner. While delivering a ferocious social critique, these stories are steeped in the poetry and stark beauty of an ancient land and culture.
