Synopsis

An amateur sleuth hunts for dirt on a murder and three missing maids in this classic English mystery by the author of the Department Z series.

When not working at MI5, Patrick Dawlish frequently collaborates with the police to catch murderous criminals. Of course, many of the police, in turn, like to remind Dawlish that he isn’t one of them and he should keep his feet out of the murky waters of crime. Dawlish is all too happy to oblige, but Superintendent Trivett of Scotland Yard needs his help . . .

Housekeepers are disappearing in the isolated town of Terne. Three to be precise—all young women and all employed by the same man. Mr. Clive Dickerson is suspiciously aloof about the matter, especially after a woman wearing the clothes of one of the missing is found dead in a river. To determine what is going on—and locate the remaining women—Dawlish must first find someone willing to go undercover and infiltrate Dickerson’s mansion. But who could be so daring? Or so foolish?

Detective Daniel Swann and debutante Juliette Thorndike once again team up to solve a dangerous mystery—while trying to keep their growing romance secret.

Someone is preying upon the street children of Regency London. They seem to think no one will notice when urchins go missing—and even if they are noticed, who will care? Daniel needs to do something about the missing children. But with recent revelations about his past and an unexpected, somewhat unwelcome inheritance to deal with, this is a terrible time to dive back into the seedy underbelly of the crime world. Nevertheless, he's still a Bow Street runner, and his partner Lady Juliette is sensitive to the plight of these wayward youngsters. They're on the case, searching shadowed alleys and coal-drenched streets to find the missing.

But the tangle of expectation and the dynamics of power cannot be easily ignored, even if there are children in danger. When Daniel's past threatens to overwhelm his future, he will need a miracle and the help of his friends to both apprehend the villain and unravel his tangled family web. And it may be that his new responsibilities demand that he leave the children of the shadows to their terrible fate—or lose everything.

    Reapers Creepers.

Fresh off my Voodoo-tastic vacation to New Orleans, I find myself presented with the first test of my newly discovered magic. There’s been a murder in the neighboring town of Pine Shoals and the victim has decided she’s not cut out for the spectral life and needs a gentle push into the Otherworld.

As it turns out, conjuring some magic and telling a ghost to ‘go towards the light’ isn’t quite good enough, and now the hysterical ghost is stuck in some kind of limbo land.

It’s up to me to solve her murder before the poor ghost goes insane—or, becomes demon food. Whichever happens first.

A "vivid and visceral, gritty and magical, dark and soaring” (Meg Gardiner) novel from one of the most electrifying voices in contemporary crime fiction, Gabino Iglesias, this deeply honest story follows several, lost, desperate folk in the heart of the southwest. In this mosaic horror/crime novel, ghosts and old gods guide the hands of those caught up in a violent struggle to save the soul of the American southwest. A man tasked with shuttling children over the border believes the Virgin Mary is guiding him towards final justice. A woman offers colonizer blood to the Mother of Chaos. A boy joins corpse destroyers to seek vengeance for the death of his father. These stories intertwine with those of a vengeful spirit and a hungry creature to paint a timely, compelling, pulpy portrait of revenge, family, and hope.
