Beschreibung

A convict has a vendetta against Patrick Dawlish—and he’s just been set free, in this gripping British Golden Age mystery from the Edgar Award–winning author.   Detective Patrick Dawlish has made a lot of enemies putting men behind bars, but none more dangerous than Maurice Gorman, a conman whose son died while being pursued by Dawlish. At his sentencing, Gorman vowed to kill Dawlish and has talked of nothing else for all seven years of his imprisonment—which has just ended.   Immediately, the now-retired Dawlish is besieged by a violent hate campaign starting with mocking phone calls, car bombs, and the abduction of his friend Ted’s wife. As events spiral out of control, an even more devastating possibility arises: if Gorman is not behind the attacks, then someone else is. And that person—hiding behind the ultimate suspect—may be even harder to stop . . .

Joshua Albert Flynn was born in Sheerness, Kent, on 15th September 1863.
He was educated at private schools and later graduated from King's College, London.
His initial career was with the Civil Service where he thrived. A marriage to Ada Parkinson brought two sons and three daughters into their lives.
He worked in South Africa as a financial adviser to Lord Kitchener before stints at the Admiralty and the War Office. In 1916 he was appointed director-general of finance at the Ministry of Pensions. His stellar professional career brought him a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1910 and a knighthood in 1919.
His career in literature, under the pseudonym ‘Owen Oliver’, started late and is almost forgotten today. Although he wrote a handful of novels, he was well regarded as the author of short stories for children. But amongst the 250 stories he wrote and published in the leading periodicals and the magazines of the day his ambitions spread much wider. He was able to write across a number of genres. His humourous stories received particular praise as did his many science fiction stories, where undoubtedly his time in Government helped bring across a particular way of imparting information into the structure of narratives as normal everyday folk came up against terrifying and dystopian happenings.
Owen Oliver, died in Streatham, south London on 8th October 1933. He was 70.

Winner of four major prizes for the best critical/biographical book related to crime fiction: the Edgar, Anthony, Macavity and H.R.F. Keating Awards; and shortlisted for both the Agatha and Gold Dagger Awards.
‘Martin Edwards is the closest thing there has been to a philosopher of crime writing.’ The Times
In the first major history of crime fiction in fifty years, The Life of Crime: Detecting the History of Mysteries and their Creators traces the evolution of the genre from the eighteenth century to the present, offering brand-new perspective on the world’s most popular form of fiction.
Author Martin Edwards is a multi-award-winning crime novelist, the President of the Detection Club, archivist of the Crime Writers’ Association and series consultant to the British Library’s highly successful series of crime classics, and therefore uniquely qualified to write this book. He has been a widely respected genre commentator for more than thirty years, winning the CWA Diamond Dagger for making a significant contribution to crime writing in 2020, when he also compiled and published Howdunit: A Masterclass in Crime Writing by Members of the Detection Club and the novel Mortmain Hall. His critically acclaimed The Golden Age of Murder (Collins Crime Club, 2015) was a landmark study of Detective Fiction between the wars.
The Life of Crime is the result of a lifetime of reading and enjoying all types of crime fiction, old and new, from around the world. In what will surely be regarded as his magnum opus, Martin Edwards has thrown himself undaunted into the breadth and complexity of the genre to write an authoritative – and readable – study of its development and evolution. With crime fiction being read more widely than ever around the world, and with individual authors increasingly the subject of extensive academic study, his expert distillation of more than two centuries of extraordinary books and authors – from the tales of E.T.A. Hoffmann to the novels of Patricia Cornwell – into one coherent history is an extraordinary feat and makes for compelling reading.
Edwards, a master of the mystery genre, delves into the literary arts of crime fiction, exploring its evolution from amateur sleuth tales to top-rated novels. His biography-like approach to the subject matter, coupled with his language proficiency, makes this book a must-read for any crime fiction enthusiast.
For fans of Otto Penzler (Best Crime Stories of the Year Volume 4), Elly Griffiths (The Last Remains), Richard Osman (We Solve Murders), Ethel Lina White (PUT OUT THE LIGHT), and Anthony Horowitz (Marble Hall Murders).
