Beschreibung

John Camden Hotten's "A Dictionary of Slang, Cant, and Vulgar Words" serves as an authoritative exploration of the colorful linguistic tapestry that characterizes British vernacular. Published in 1859, this pioneering lexicon catalogues a vast array of informal expressions, criminal cant, and societal slang, showcasing Hotten's keen ear for the nuances of language and his dedication to capturing the evolving nature of colloquialisms. The text reflects a Victorian fascination with language as both a social marker and a means of identity, blending scholarly rigor with an accessible style that engages readers from various socio-economic backgrounds. Hotten, a prominent publisher and writer, had a vested interest in the marginalized voices within society, which likely inspired his comprehensive examination of slang. His career was marked by a commitment to uncovering the realities of urban life in the 19th century, and this dictionary embodies that goal. Furthermore, his work emerged during a period of significant linguistic change, as industrialization and urbanization reshaped social interactions and dialects. This dictionary is invaluable for linguists, historians, and lay readers alike, providing insight into the socio-cultural dynamics of its time. Hotten'Äôs work not only preserves a moment in linguistic history but also offers an entertaining glimpse into the richness of everyday speech, making it a must-read for anyone interested in the evolution of English language and culture.

Summary: What Happened to You? (Oprah Winfrey and Bruce Perry)
You are likely to be familiar with the question, “What’s wrong with you?” We've all encountered it at some point, and most likely, we've asked it ourselves. But have you ever considered that this might be the wrong question to ask?
In a powerful and compelling conversation, Oprah and Dr. Perry discuss the importance of our past in shaping us and why asking “What’s wrong with you?” might be an unhelpful and misguided question. They propose shifting the focus to “What happened to you?” instead. This may seem simple, but it has been groundbreaking in changing the way we understand and think about trauma, which in turn has offered a significantly more optimistic approach to recovery.
Asking “What happened to you?” also removes any unintentional blame or fault directed toward any traumatized individual. It favors a compassionate, empathetic approach to therapy and healing. But this is just one of the core messages of Oprah and Dr. Perry’s book.
“Summary: What Happened to You?” provides you with all the powerful ideas, practices, and concepts that Oprah and Dr. Perry discuss in their original book.
You'll get:A complete breakdown of the original covering the most essential aspects of it in a concise, clear, and easy-to-read format—without missing anything important!Explanations of key brain systems and processes from a world-leading neuroscientist and trauma specialist.Information on different methods of trauma treatment.A powerful combination of storytelling and the latest research on neuroscience and traumatology.Shocking facts about trauma. And much more!
While it is beneficial to have read their original work, it’s not compulsory, as this summary will provide you with all the information you need. Don't miss out on the combined wisdom of these two giants.

This is a bundle of 3 titles, which cover the following topics:
Title 1: Learning to understand ourselves, the dark and the light, the kind and the cruel, that exists within each one of us, has been a driving factor in psychological studies.
Machiavellianism in psychology refers to a personality trait which sees a person so focused on their own interests they will manipulate, deceive, and exploit others to achieve their goals. This audiobook will dive deeper into this topic along with related factors, such as how they control and manipulate others and the consequences that come with it. This audiobook will shed some light on how to spot a manipulator and how to outwit one. Listen about various blackmail tactics and how to spot and avoid some of the most common scams on the internet.
Title 2: Since our various vehicles were created, from the train, to the car, to the plane, to the sub, to the rocket, our world has gotten so much smaller, now, space is the last great frontier. There is another unknown great frontier, one that we are only beginning to discover, the human mind, especially the subconscious. Our emotions, our thoughts, that gut instinct telling you something isn’t right. It’s all linked to the subconscious.
Our subconscious is a very powerful thing, and just like every other powerful thing in the world, it’s dangerous. In fact, our own subconscious is more dangerous to us than it is to others.
Title 3: Abuse. It’s wrong, it’s terrible no matter what form it takes. When most of you hear the word abuse you think of one of the physical kinds of abuse. For others, they think of a different kind of abuse, verbal, emotional, psychological, and mental; there are others, but this book focuses on verbal abuse.

Elvis Presley, born in 1935, became known as the "King of Rock and Roll". He was a singer and actor whose career took off in 1954 when Sam Phillips recorded him singing "That's All Right," a blues number. Elvis’s performances were known for their suggestive movements and gyrations which created controversy. Despite this, his popularity grew rapidly. He signed with RCA Victor in 1955 and had his first number-one hit with "Heartbreak Hotel" in 1956. Elvis’s music combined elements of rock and roll, pop, rockabilly, country, gospel, R&B, and blues. He was drafted into the US Army in 1958 and died at the age of 42 in 1977.

    CURIOUS FACT SAMPLES:

Elvis Presley's twin brother, Jesse Garon, was delivered stillborn 35 minutes before Elvis was born. Elvis became very close to his parents, especially his mother, growing up in Tupelo, Mississippi.

The Presley family attended an Assembly of God church, where Elvis found his initial musical inspiration. They often relied on neighbors and government food assistance because Vernon Presley moved from one odd job to the next.

Sam Phillips was looking for someone who could bring the sound of black musicians to a broader audience. He invited Elvis to record after being impressed with his singing, pairing him with guitarist Winfield "Scotty" Moore and upright bass player Bill Black.

During an unfruitful recording session, Elvis launched into a 1946 blues number, Arthur Crudup's "That's All Right", which Phillips began taping. This was the sound he had been looking for, which led to the start of Elvis's career.
