Beschreibung

This sermon, although very short, is peculiarly interesting: how it was preserved we are not told; but it bears strong marks of having been published from notes taken by one of the hearers. There is no proof that any memorandum or notes of this sermon was found in the autograph of the preacher. In the list of Bunyan's works published by Chas. Doe, at the end of the 'Heavenly Footman,' March 1690, it stands No. 44. He professes to give the title-page, word for word, as it was first printed, It is, 'Mr. John Bunyan's last sermon, at London, preached at Mr. Gamman's meeting-house, near Whitechapel, August 19th, 1688, upon John 1:13: showing a resemblance between a natural and a spiritual birth; and how every man and woman may try themselves, and know whether they are born again or not.' Published 1689, in about one sheet in 12mo. From this it appears to have been preached only two days before his fatal illness, and twelve days before his decease, which took place August 31st, 1688. The disease which terminated his invaluable life, was brought on by a journey to Reading on horseback, undertaken with the benevolent design of reconciling an offended father to his son. Having accomplished his object, he rode to London; on his way home, through a heavy rain, the effects of which appeared soon after this, his last sermon was preached. He bore, with most exemplary patience and resignation, the fever which invaded his body; and, at a distance from his wife and family, in the house of his friend Mr. Strudwick, at Snow Hill, his pilgrimage was ended, and he fell asleep in perfect peace, to awake amidst the harmonies and glory of the celestial city.

GEO. OFFOR.

John Bunyan (baptised 30 November 1628 – 31 August 1688) was an English writer and Puritan preacher best remembered as the author of the Christian allegory The Pilgrim's Progress, which also became an influential literary model. In addition to The Pilgrim's Progress, Bunyan wrote nearly sixty titles, many of them expanded sermons.

That there is a source of permanent and pure happiness that is accessible to us all: that is the eternal promise of spiritual enlightenment. This book offers an innovative, rational, and realistic approach to enlightenment that explains why it is possible and how to achieve it. Its findings are based on a successful 20-year spiritual search and a study of eastern mysticism as it relates to many other disciplines. It argues that enlightenment involves both the mystical search and, crucially, the intellectual and emotional preparation for it. As a result, it offers an approach to spiritual truth that is comprehensive and unique. Unlike many other spiritual systems, it encourages critical thinking and explains enlightenment within a persuasive philosophical framework. It suggests the necessity of being honest about our own desires and finding the messages inherent in negative emotions, and it offers powerful new methods to accomplish this. Finally, it gives excellent, concise explanations of the self-inquiry techniques of Hindu mystics that are the royal road to enlightenment. Together, these form a powerful and unusual instrument for seeking the truth.

The translation of the Hebrew Scriptures is both immensely important and challenging. It's vital because it allows billions of people who do not read or understand Hebrew to engage with the Hebrew Scriptures. However, capturing the full meaning of the original language is a complex and sometimes impossible task.Hebrew is a rich and nuanced language, carrying cultural, historical, and theological significance in every word. Sometimes, there's no direct English equivalent to a Hebrew word.Inevitably, each translator brings their perspective to the text, which may unintentionally introduce bias. If a translator holds a particular theological view, they might select words that support their interpretation. This is not always intentional, as our beliefs and perspectives naturally influence how we understand and communicate ideas. However, this can sometimes result in translations that reflect personal agendas or specific doctrinal perspectives. For instance, how one translates key passages can significantly affect theological concepts like the nature of God, salvation, or eschatology. This underscores the importance of approaching any translation with discernment, recognizing that it represents an interpretation, not just a straightforward rendering of the original text.In this concise volume, we journey through 15 Hebrew words rich in meaning yet often misunderstood or mistranslated. In their complexity, these words have a significant impact on readers' beliefs, often without their conscious awareness. Each word explored in this book holds an entire world within it, encapsulating profound cultural, historical, and theological nuances often overlooked in translation. Our exploration aims to illuminate these subtleties, enhancing the understanding of these words in their original Hebrew context.

Apologetic Primer Explains How Reason Supports Christianity's Claims
From the classroom to mainstream media, Christians regularly find their fundamental beliefs discounted by opponents who consider faith to be incompatible with reason. Faith is viewed as subjective, emotional, and a crutch for those who find the real world too hard. The late R. C. Sproul, however, claims faith reveals just how rational Christianity truly is.
This book surveys the history and fundamentals of apologetics to demonstrate how reason and scientific inquiry actually support Christianity's claims—thus equipping believers to defend the existence of God and the Bible's authority. The defense of the faith is not a luxury or an intellectual vanity. It is a task appointed by God to give reason to your eternal hope as you bear witness before the world.

    - A Logical and Biblical Defense: Sets forth the basic truth claims of Christianity to show the rationality of the Christian faith
    - Comprehensive: Deals with arguments from philosophy, science, reason, logic, and history
    - Ideal for New and Seasoned Believers Alike: Helps Christians know what they believe and why they believe it
    - Great Resource for Individual, Small Group, or Classroom Study
