Synopsis

In "A Visit to the Philippine Islands," John Bowring presents a meticulously detailed account of his travels through the archipelago during the mid-19th century. The book reflects Bowring's keen observational skills and rich descriptive language, capturing the vibrant cultures, geographical diversity, and sociopolitical climate of the islands at that time. His literary style combines personal narrative with extensive research, creating a hybrid text that serves both as travelogue and ethnographical exploration. Set against the backdrop of a period marked by European exploration and colonial ambitions, Bowring's work contributes significantly to the understanding of the Philippines within a global context. John Bowring (1792–1872) was not only an accomplished writer but also a prominent linguist and politician, who served as Hong Kong's governor. His extensive travels across Asia and Europe cultivated in him a profound appreciation for different cultures and their complexities. The insights he gained and the relationships he fostered with local communities enriched his depiction of the Philippine Islands, highlighting both their allure and the challenges they faced during colonial encroachment. This book is highly recommended for scholars and general readers alike who wish to delve deep into the historical and cultural tapestry of the Philippines. Bowring's vivid storytelling and perceptive analysis provide indispensable perspectives for understanding the islands' past, making it a significant contribution to the discourse on colonialism and cultural exchange.

The Maya civilization, one of the most sophisticated and enduring cultures of Mesoamerica, flourished for thousands of years, leaving behind a rich legacy of myth, ritual, and cosmic understanding. Their world was deeply interconnected with the supernatural, where gods, spirits, and celestial forces played vital roles in everyday life. Through sacred texts, oral traditions, and intricate ceremonial practices, the Maya passed down their myths—stories that explained the origins of the universe, the struggles of gods and heroes, and the sacred cycles of time. These legends were not merely tales; they formed the foundation of their spiritual and societal structures, influencing everything from kingship to agriculture.
At the heart of Maya society was a profound connection between myth and ritual. Unlike many cultures that viewed myths as separate from daily life, the Maya saw them as living forces that required constant renewal through ceremonies, sacrifices, and offerings. Bloodletting, a sacred act performed by rulers and priests, was believed to nourish the gods and maintain cosmic balance. Grand pyramids and temple complexes, aligned with celestial events, served as sacred theaters where rituals reenacted the struggles of deities, ensuring harmony between the human and divine realms. The famous Popol Vuh, often regarded as the Maya "Book of Creation," recounts the epic journey of the Hero Twins as they navigate the treacherous underworld, triumphing over the forces of chaos and death. This myth, like many others, reflected the Maya’s deep understanding of duality, rebirth, and the cosmic order.
Deciphering Maya mythology has been a long and complex journey, shaped by archaeological discoveries, linguistic breakthroughs, and the resilience of indigenous communities.

Xia Dynasty - The Myth and...

The Xia Dynasty is often considered the first dynasty of China, marking the transition from a prehistoric era dominated by tribal alliances to a structured monarchy. However, much of what is known about the Xia comes from ancient texts written centuries later, blurring the line between history and legend. At the heart of this foundation myth is Yu the Great, a figure credited with taming the catastrophic floods that once plagued the Yellow River region.
According to traditional accounts, China before the Xia was ruled by the Five Emperors, semi-mythical sages who brought order and knowledge to early societies. The final ruler of this period, Emperor Shun, recognized Yu for his brilliance and appointed him to control the devastating floods that had threatened agricultural settlements for generations. Unlike his predecessors, who attempted to block or divert the waters, Yu devised a system of dredging and canal-building that allowed the floodwaters to drain naturally into rivers and the sea. His efforts reportedly took over a decade, during which he traveled across the land, surveying the terrain and directing large-scale labor projects. His selfless dedication won him the admiration of the people, and his success in flood control cemented his reputation as a leader with the Mandate of Heaven.
The concept of the Mandate of Heaven, though later fully developed under the Zhou Dynasty, has its roots in the Xia period. It suggested that rulers were chosen by divine will and that their legitimacy depended on their ability to maintain order and prosperity. Yu's ability to tame the floods demonstrated both his virtue and his right to rule. Upon Emperor Shun’s abdication, Yu became the first king of the Xia Dynasty, establishing a hereditary monarchy that would continue for generations.

Driving around Australia is one of life's biggest adventures, if you're crazy enough to do it. But as anyone who has broken down on the Nullarbor can attest, it's nerve-wracking to head out into the big red.
David Batty knows how to get out of hairy situations because he's wound up in a bunch himself. From nearly being washed away by flash floods in the Kimberley to being marooned on an island in the Top End eating stingray, Batty's Bush Bible is chock-full of yarns from David's four decades as a film director in the most remote regions of Australia. He has lived in Alice Springs and Broome longer than he has in the Big Smoke, has traversed the Tanami Track between Alice Springs and Darwin hundreds of times and reckons he's done more laps of Australia than a Qantas plane.
This book also contains the wisdom of many of the First Nations people he has worked with throughout his career, including interviews with the original Bush Mechanics and Black As boys. You'll find out how they stuff blown tyres with spinifex, fashion mulga wood into gear sticks and keep cars going long after their used-by date - and learn how to have a whirl yourself.
Batty's Bush Bible is your guide to going bush and living to tell the tale. Filled with practical advice, ripper yarns and road-trip tips, it's designed to be picked up, put down, tossed in the glove box or, if you really need it, used for kindling to cook your tailgate dinner. Her first night in a Tanzanian tent began with a prowling lion’s roar. Will the savage terrors open her eyes to an unseen world?
Sue Tidwell lived in awe of Africa’s extraordinary wildlife. After years spent appreciating the animals in her imagination, the tenderhearted American hated the idea of joining her husband on a big game hunt. And getting attacked by blood-sucking tsetse flies the moment she stepped off the plane gave no hint of the mind-blowing change of perspective in her future…
With her initial animosity turning into curiosity as they breathlessly tracked dangerous beasts, Sue formed a surprising bond with their young, female, government-assigned game scout. And as she became entranced by the tales and wisdom from the Masimba Camp crew, she was humbled by the mystery of the vilified safari and the people who relied on it for survival.
Supplementing her own experiences on the elephant-rutted roads with local insights and scientific research into conservation efforts, Tidwell explores how her preconceived beliefs sluiced away under the deluge of reality. And with an evocative narrative peppered with self-deprecating humor, vivid imagery, and over ninety photos and illustrations, you’ll emerge forever changed by the truths this greenhorn found buried in a rugged and romantic landscape.
Cries of the Savanna is an unflinching and passionate memoir. If you like awe-inspiring adventures, truth revealed through laughter, and life being stranger than fiction, then you'll adore Sue Tidwell's brush with the wild.

NOTE: The audible version of Cries of the Savanna includes guest narration by Lilian Mremi, the Tanzanian Game Scout featured in the book, as well as the LITERAL cries of the savanna -- lions, hyenas, hippos, elephants, leopards, baboons and more.
