Synopsis

The business of beating death by becoming a modern day Medici is booming. In today's economy, where investments in stocks, bonds, commodities, real estate and hedge funds have either been severely battered from the Coronavirus crash or from the rollercoaster volatility, investors are increasingly seeking non-correlated alternative investments. How? By investing in a rare instrument and becoming a patron. It is not only a good return on investment. What better way to get rich and write yourself into history books than to be the owner and donor of a Stradivarius violin to a world class soloist or a museum? Tax deductions are indeed a benefit, but immortality is a better blessing. By reading this book, you can learn from the experts in the field who understand that investing in immortality is the best way to have a meaningful and mortal life.

This book details the author’s Italian-American beginnings in the New York of the 1950s and the profound effect that his extended, working-class family has had on his life. So great has this effect been that, as the author ages, he finds he thinks less of the momentous history through which he has lived, or of the intellectual life he has enjoyed, than of some things far more permanent, profound, and primordial: the people and places he knew as a youth, and that knew him; the baseball he played, the movies he loved (and the movie stars he spotted), the teachers he revered; the English his family learned as well as the Italian he unlearned, or lost in translation; the Mafiosi he met and marked; and the religion of his youth that he abandoned, yet that did not abandon him. Cardullo knows that he can’t go home again: all he can really do is think about it, which he does so eloquently in Straight Out of Brooklyn.

Escape was radio's leading anthology series of high-adventure, airing on CBS from July 7, 1947 until September 25, 1954. The series' well-remembered opening combined Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain with this introduction, as intoned by Paul Frees and/or William Conrad: “Tired of the everyday grind? Ever dream of a life of romantic adventure? Want to get away from it all? We offer you... Escape!” Following the opening theme, a second announcer (usually Roy Rowan) would add: “Escape! Designed to free you from the four walls of today for a half-hour of high adventure!” Many story premises, both originals and adaptations, involved a protagonist in dire life-or-death straits. Actors on the series included: Eleanor Audley, Parley Baer, Harry Bartell, William Conrad, Ted deCorsia, John Dehner, Sam Edwards, Virginia Gregg, Lou Merrill, Howard McNear, Jeanette Nolan, Alan Reed, Bill Johnstone, Marvin Miller, Frank Lovejoy, Berry Kroeger, Vic Perrin, Elliott Lewis, Jack Webb, Peggy Webber and Will Wright. Music was supplied by Del Castillo, organist Ivan Ditmars, Cy Feuer, Wilbur Hatch and Leith Stevens. The announcers were Paul Frees and Roy Rowan.

Creative recipes and celebrations of seasonal bounties—in the garden, in the kitchen, and on the canvas.

Artist Claude Monet took inspiration from his gardens and the lily ponds at Giverny. Van Gogh, Manet, Matisse, and Cezanne created still life masterpieces of fruit and flowers. Similarly, cooks from Julia Child and Alice Waters to Patricia Wells and Jamie Oliver have taken culinary inspiration from homegrown or fresh local produce.

Now artist Maryjo Koch explores this centuries-old connection in a new cookbook inspired by her studio garden. The garden not only provides the artistic subjects she and her students paint, but also serves as the culinary toolbox for the delectable and visual feasts she prepares for her family, guests, and painting classes throughout the year.

Artists, cooks, and gardeners alike will find tips, recipes, and painting projects centered on seasonal food pairings. For example, the winter garden focuses on soups with offerings like Minestrone with Crumbled Bacon and Butternut Squash-Apple Soup. Springtime brings culinary attention to leafy greens such as Flower Petal Salad and Spring Asparagus Frittata with Peas and Peppers. As the seasons’ bounty progresses, the painting subjects and menus change as well, invented with whatever is freshest and most beautiful in the garden. Whether you find yourself more at home with an artist’s brush, a cook’s wooden spoon, or a gardener’s spade, you’ll find inspiration inside this lavish cookbook.
