Beschreibung

In 893, Asser wrote this book, a biography of Alfred the Great entitled The Life of King Alfred; in the original Latin, the title is Vita Ælfredi Regis Angul Saxonum. The date is known from Asser's mention of the king's age in the text. The work, which is less than twenty thousand words long, is one of the most important sources of information on Alfred the Great, King of the West Saxons from 871 to c. 886 and King of the Anglo-Saxons from c. 886 until his death in 899. He is well-known for overseeing the conversion of Viking leader Guthrum to Christianity, and defending his kingdom against the Viking attempt at conquest, leading him to become the dominant ruler in England.

The colorful true adventures of an unexpected "pot-star" turned cannabis CEO in the new Wild West of California's green rush.
Don't give anyone your real name.

Never say anything to your loved ones.

Always have a full tank of gas, a jump starter, and an alibi.
The year is 2008, and the green rush is taking root in Humboldt County, California. Born and raised in this "Emerald Triangle" famous for its natural beauty and perfect cannabis-growing conditions, Ty Kearns wants no part of it. He has seen too many friends and acquaintances lose or derail their lives for the green dream, always feeling the itch for more cash and more power.
But as a college student with tuition to pay—and few options in the middle of the worst recession since the Great Depression—Ty is willing to try almost anything.
When his eccentric Uncle Bob introduces him to some local growers, the rules of the industry start to dominate Ty's double life. He spends his days taking notes in lecture halls and his nights and weekends five hours north at his secret farm in the mountains, where danger and beauty are as tangible as the plants themselves.
Soon, he is more successful than he ever could have imagined—more successful than just about any other grower on the mountain. But he faces natural disasters, animal encounters, the gossip mill, the authorities, the highs and lows of first love, and a crowd of "trimmigrants" and pot-star groupies as he grapples with the damage that growing does to his mental health and the land itself.
Today, Ty is the CEO of SEVEN LEAVES, a fully licensed cannabis cultivation operation with product in over four hundred stores and a commitment to 100 percent green energy. But his path to sustainable growing was long and gnarly. Growing pot wasn't Ty's plan, but he found his calling when he stepped out of the shadow of the mountain.
A coming-of-age journey where the truth is stranger than fiction, Five Hours North tells the story of the lost pre-legalization weed scene, when the characters were larger than life and the growers were always one step from disaster.

Hermosa Beach, California, in the mid-1960s. Sun, surf, and sand castles along The Strand to a soundtrack of “Fun, Fun, Fun.” But the hang-loose life of the locals was soon being drowned out—by a social storm able to turn even the most perfect wave into a brutal riptide. How do you go from planning vacations and evaluating investments to planning prison visits and evaluating defense pleas? How do you watch your surfer-champion sons turn into drug lords? Inmates? How do you watch your entire family die, one by one?Yet never stop fighting. What does it take to look in the mirror and search for the meaning of enabler? Or face that you’re sacrificing your own livelihood for Scotch? To ride a pounding wave of triumphs and tragedies, and paddle back for more? It takes a rare and special person: Karl McMillen.Karl is America’s hard work ethic. The guy Jefferson said will “determine never to be idle.” Babe Ruth’s “person who never gives up.” His story opens with a panorama of early 20th century California; a last-gasp look at the West before it was settled. When “entitlement” meant you were entitled to work your tail off. Karl’s success epitomizes that the cleanest hands in business are the ones that have smeared the most elbow grease. Karl worked and the system worked. He was said to have the “Golden Touch.”But systems break down. As America’s youth got swept into the deep murkiness of drugs, Karl was in over his head, too. He encountered something his work ethic and Golden Touch couldn’t conquer: Addiction. But he fought to apply his talents to this new subject. Gathering data and analyzing treatments, he uncovered so much.Triumphs and Tragedies explores the psychology of addiction through “voices from the street.” It probes the essence of enabling and the value of “rehabs”—uncommon concepts in the ‘60s. It demonstrates how a perfect life can be traded for pain; but how that pain can translate into a strong antidote against one of society’s greatest ills.

"Children with diabetes can live full, happy, productive lives. I hope my story can stand as proof of that fact."
Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age seven, Wendy Louise Novak had to create her own path in a world defined by stigma, struggle, and hope.
With little public awareness of her condition, Wendy's only role model was her fiercely independent father, who grew up in an era when diabetes meant a difficult, and often short, life. He taught her to "follow the rules" and stay self-reliant. That sense of independence carried Wendy through college to a successful career, globetrotting excitement, and a whirlwind romance with her husband, David.
Wendy built a loving family as she navigated the highs and lows of a condition that was still widely misunderstood. Despite tough times, she learned to balance following the rules with following her passions, saying, "I never wanted to be the kind of person who stayed home and worried about whether or not I could take it, and so I didn't."
Today, Wendy is the face of the Wendy Novak Diabetes Institute, which supports groundbreaking clinical services, education, and research to ensure young people with diabetes can thrive. In this honest but uplifting account of a life well lived, Wendy shares what she has learned, including practical tips for managing diabetes.
With a foreword by the author's husband, businessman, and philanthropist David Novak, Diabetes and Me shows patients and families that a diagnosis doesn't define your life.
"There are always ways to experience the joys in life, no matter what it throws at you."
