Synopsis

I have been involved in the field of transportation all my life – especially civil aviation and aviation law. At the age of 85, I have decided to publish a book about the dictatorships that exist today. If there are any inaccuracies, I kindly ask for your indulgence. Dictatorships are designed to dominate and rule. In a dictatorship, people are told what to do and what not to do. Sometimes, a person, a family, a political party, or a military junta exercises unlimited power. Dictators often come from the military. Since 2020, there have been military coups in Mali, Guinea-Bissau, Burkina-Faso, and Sudan. The French army, which had contributed to political stabilization in numerous African states, was unfortunately asked to leave their countries by the new military rulers. Instead, the Russian mercenary force Wagner took over the previous tasks of the French army. Destabilization takes place wherever the Wagner mercenary force is active. In addition, the Islamist terrorist organizations in Africa have exacerbated the precarious situation. Some dictators have gone to school or studied in Europe: the dictator of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, Syria’s ruler, Bashar al-Assad or the leader of the Khmer Rouge, Pol Pot. Once military rulers have taken power, there is rarely a democratic transition of power. Although many African countries have enormous natural resources, they also have significant conflicts, which lead to refugee flows within Africa, Asia, and Western Europe. I have tried to trace the dictators’ lives and have listed their ranking status: Democracy, World Press, and Corruption.

“We’ve spent nine trillion dollars bombing the Middle East like mad. We’ve sown death there, including our own. And what has it gotten us? Nothing.”
    Donald Trump, November 1, 2024.

The figure of the devil has haunted our collective consciousness since the dawn of time. He structures our societies, whether religious or secular. Sometimes, the devil has been a friend before being “demonized”. Sometimes, by force of circumstance, he has become an ally. And sometimes, the devil must be eliminated to mask or even justify the errors of our societies.
Thus, during the Second World War, we made a pact with Stalin to bring down a devil deemed more formidable: Hitler. In Northern Ireland, the British ended up talking with representatives of the IRA, just as the French did a few years earlier with the Algerian FLN. Recently, the Americans negotiated with the Taliban, another terrorist group, before handing over the keys to Afghanistan. Saddam Hussein, Muammar Gaddafi and Bashar al-Assad were friends of the West before the latter precipitated their downfall, even if it meant causing chaos in their countries.
Régis Le Sommier has been a war reporter for 27 years, and has himself interviewed a number of infamous figures. His aim is to revisit the concept of the devil in the light of recent and current conflicts, in order to answer one question: shouldn’t the deleterious consequences of geopolitics conducted “in the name of good” lead us to doubt the validity of the actions taken by our governments, even today, against those they like to refer to as devils?

    Mohammed El-Kurd

"Mohammed El-Kurd has written a new Discourse on Colonialism for the twenty-first century." —Robin D. G. Kelley

Perfect Victims is an urgent affirmation of the Palestinian condition of resistance and refusal—an ode to the steadfastness of a nation.

Palestine is a microcosm of the world: on fire, stubborn, fragmented, dignified. While a settler colonial state continues to inflict devastating violence, fundamental truths are deliberately obscured—the perpetrators are coddled while the victims are blamed and placed on trial.

Why must Palestinians prove their humanity? And what are the implications of such an infuriatingly impossible task? With fearless prose and lyrical precision, Mohammed El-Kurd refuses a life spent in cross-examination. Rather than asking the oppressed to perform a perfect victimhood, El-Kurd asks friends and foes alike to look Palestinians in the eye, forgoing both deference and condemnation.

How we see Palestine reveals how we see each other; how we see everything else. Masterfully combining candid testimony, history, and reportage, Perfect Victims presents a powerfully simple demand: dignity for the Palestinian.

    The British Constitution - A...

    Martin Loughlin

The British constitution is regarded as unique among the constitutions of the world. What are the main characteristics of Britain's peculiar constitutional arrangements? How has the British constitution altered in response to the changing nature of its state—from England, to Britain, to the United Kingdom? What impact has the UK's developing relations with the European Union caused?

These are some of the questions that Martin Loughlin addresses in this Very Short Introduction. As a constitution, it is one that has grown organically in response to changes in the economic, political, and social environment, and which is not contained in a single authoritative text. By considering the nature and authority of the current British constitution, and placing it in the context of others, Loughlin considers how the traditional idea of a constitution came to be retained, what problems have been generated as a result of adapting a traditional approach in a modern political world, looking at what the future prospects for the British constitution are.

In this new edition of the Very Short Introduction, Loughlin includes a discussion of the impact of developments over the decade since its first publication, examining Brexit, the Scottish independence referendum of 2014, and the settlement in Northern Ireland.

    Kincora: Britain's Shame

For over four decades the story of the extraordinary evil that occurred at the Kincora Boys’ Home in East Belfast in the 1970s and the shocking attempts by MI5 to cover it up have haunted our political and social terrain for decades. Award-winning former BBC journalist Chris Moore has been working on the story since it first emerged in 1980, and has uncovered a horrific catalogue of failed opportunities to put an end to the sadistic activities of the men who were running the home, in particular those of prominent Orangeman and MI5 source William McGrath.

What has emerged over the course of Moore’s investigation, in which he has gained exclusive access to witnesses, secret documents and whistleblowers within the British intelligence services, is that not only were the boys in Kincora systematically sexually abused, but that some were forced into a countrywide paedophile ring, whose members included Lord Louis Mountbatten. Moore also exposes MI5’s attempts to cover up what actually happened and that the organisation knew as early as the 1970s that the boys in Kincora were being abused.

Kincora is a shocking exposé of how the British state failed to protect some of its most vulnerable members.
