  In Ten Hail Marys, Kate Howarth vividly recalls the first seventeen years of her life in Sydney's slums, suburbs and rural New South Wales, Australia.  
  Abandoned by her mother as a baby, and then by her volatile grandmother. Kate was 14 when she was sent to live with a neighbour, who barely tolerated her. Kate was taken out of school three days before she was scheduled to take the exams for the Intermediate Certificate, the minimum education required to obtain meaningful employment. 
  At 15, everything and everyone Kate called family and home was gone. 
  In January 1966, Kate gave birth to a healthy baby boy at St. Margaret's Home for unwed mothers in Sydney. In the months before and the days after the birth, she resisted treatment that had been deemed tantamount to torture when she steadfastly refused to sign the consent for adoption. 
  Kate's son, whom she called Adam, was the only family she had left. If they were going to take him, they would have to do so without her consent. 
  Of the thousands of unwed mothers at the time, Kate became the only unwed mother who could be found who left the institution with her baby. She was only sixteen years old. What inspired such courage and determination? 
  Ten Hail Marys is a frank, at times funny and incredibly moving true story, told without an ounce of bitterness or self-pity. 
  More than a memoir of Kate's life struggles, Ten Hail Marys blew the whistle on one of the darkest chapters in Australian social history. 
  Following publication in 2010, Ten Hail Marys was shortlisted for the Victorian Premier's Literary Award for Indigenous writing and won the Age Non-Fiction Book of the Year 2010 in an open category. 
  In 2011, Kate gave evidence to the National Senate Inquiry into what is now known as Forced Adoption Practices, which led to changes in adoption laws.

After fifty years, the story of the renowned 101st Airborne's major offensive near Tam Ky, South Vietnam, remains largely unknown. Fighting at Tam Ky by the 1st Brigade began 15 May 1969 while the 101st's 3rd Brigade battled on Hamburger Hill. The political consequences of Hamburger Hill's high casualties caused Lamar Plain and its high casualties to remain classified and undisclosed.   Sherwood's superb research of now declassified records uncovers how such a large battle could remain hidden and undisclosed. But that is not the heart of his story. His focus is on the courage and commitment of the young infantry soldiers who fought. This book uses actual battle records and eyewitness accounts to follow "Never Quit" Delta Company and its sister companies through continuous combat at Tam Ky. Delta Company's soldiers lived up to their motto despite increasing casualties, a tough enemy, harsh battlefield conditions, and loss of leaders.

  Charlie Watts provided the foundation that underpinned the music of the Rolling Stones. The band became a by-word for rock 'n' roll excess but for Watts, playing with the Stones did not become the ego trip that drove Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. A jazz aficionado, Watts vied with Bill Wyman for the title of least charismatic member of the band; he eschewed the limelight and rarely gave interviews. And he famously described life with the Stones as five years of playing, 20 years of hanging around. 
   
  Charles Robert Watts was born on 2 June 1941 at the University College Hospital in London and was raised in Kingsbury, now part of the London Borough of Brent. His father was a lorry driver and Watts was brought up in a prefabricated house to which the family had moved after German bombs destroyed hundreds of houses in the area. A childhood friend once described how Watts had an early interest in jazz and recalled listening to 78s in Charlie's bedroom by artists such as Jelly Roll Morton and Charlie Parker.
