What often passes for dialogue these days is negotiation or debate. However, Backman feels the true aim of dialogue is mutual understanding rather than trying to convince another to see things the way we see them. He encourages us to practice true dialogue wherever we are: conversing with a stranger on a bus or at a gathering with extended family over dinner.
