Sinopse

Historian Joe A. Mobley recounts events in the Carolinas from prehistory and the first settlement by colonists through North Carolina's emergence as a state in a new, democratic nation. The history of North Carolina began before the first European explorers gazed upon its shores. Its Native inhabitants had long dominated the land and waterways. Before the colonial era ended vast numbers of English, Scottish, Swiss, Germans, French, Welsh and Africans had immigrated to North Carolina, pushing Native Americans to the margins and leaving their mark on the culture of the colony. In some ways, colonial North Carolina was unique in the early American experience. The peculiar configuration of the Outer Banks limited its commercial opportunities, but the colony was very much a part of the Atlantic world.

When it comes to sex, common wisdom holds that men roam while women crave closeness and commitment. But in this provocative, headline-making book, Daniel Bergner turns everything we thought we knew about women's arousal and desire inside out. Drawing on extensive research and interviews with renowned behavioral scientists, sexologists, psychologists, and everyday women, he forces us to reconsider long-held notions about female sexuality.
This bold and captivating journey into the world of female desire explores answers to such thought-provoking questions as: Are women perhaps the less monogamous sex? What effect do intimacy and emotional connection really have on lust? What is the role of narcissism—the desire to be desired—in female sexuality? Are political gains for women ("No means no") detrimental in the bedroom? And is the hunt for a "female Viagra" anything but a search for the cure for monogamy?
Bergner goes behind the scenes of some of the most groundbreaking experiments on sexuality today and confronts us with controversial, sometimes uncomfortable findings. Summary from The Path of Prosperity:I looked around upon the world, and saw that it was shadowed by sorrow and scorched by the fierce fires of suffering. And I looked for the cause. I looked around, but could not find it; I looked in books, but could not find it; I looked within, and found there both the cause and the self-made nature of that cause. I looked again, and deeper, and found the remedy.I found one Law, the Law of Love; one Life, the Life of adjustment to that Law; one Truth, the truth of a conquered mind and a quiet and obedient heart. And I dreamed of writing a book which should help men and women, whether rich or poor, learned or unlearned, worldly or unworldly, to find within themselves the source of all success, all happiness, all accomplishment, all truth. And the dream remained with me, and at last became substantial; and now I send it forth into the world on its mission of healing and blessedness, knowing that it cannot fail to reach the homes and hearts of those who are waiting and ready to receive it.

‘Absolutely brilliant…You cannot read this book and defend the establishment’ Alastair Campbell, The Rest is Politics
    Who owns England?
Behind this simple question lies this country’s oldest and best-kept secret. This is the history of how England’s elite came to own our land, and an inspiring manifesto for how to open up our countryside once more.
This book has been a long time coming. Since 1086, in fact. For centuries, England’s elite have covered up how they got their hands on millions of acres of our land, by constructing walls, burying surveys and more recently, sheltering behind offshore shell companies. But with the dawn of digital mapping and the Freedom of Information Act, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for them to hide.
Trespassing through tightly-guarded country estates, ecologically ravaged grouse moors and empty Mayfair mansions, writer and activist Guy Shrubsole has used these 21st century tools to uncover a wealth of never-before-seen information about the people who own our land, to create the most comprehensive map of land ownership in England that has ever been made public.
From secret military islands to tunnels deep beneath London, Shrubsole unearths truths concealed since the Domesday Book about who is really in charge of this country – at a time when Brexit is meant to be returning sovereignty to the people. Melding history, politics and polemic, he vividly demonstrates how taking control of land ownership is key to tackling everything from the housing crisis to climate change – and even halting the erosion of our very democracy.
It’s time to expose the truth about who owns England – and finally take back our green and pleasant land.
*Guy's next book The Lie of the Land is out now*
As a Sunday Times bestselling author, Guy Shrubsole delves into the political and environmental aspects of land ownership in England, shedding light on the conservation and protection policies that have been kept hidden for centuries. His expertise in urban planning and law, combined with his passion for nature and science, makes this book a top choice for those interested in understanding the architecture of power in Britain.
For fans of Robin Wall Kimmerer (The Serviceberry), Robert Macfarlane (Desert Solitaire), Chloe Dalton (Raising Hare), Manchán Magan (Thirty-Two Words for Field), and Yanis Varoufakis (Technofeudalism).

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice. In the pre-dawn hours of April 9, 1948, five weeks before the establishment of the State of Israel, members of the underground organizations Etzel and Lehi attacked the Arab village of Deir Yassin near Jerusalem. By the end of the battle, the myth of a massacre had taken root, becoming a catalyst for a previously undefined Palestinian national consciousness.

Historically, the Arabs of Palestine saw themselves as part of the broader Arab nation. Israeli military historian Dr. Uri Milstein identifies Deir Yassin as a turning point, when Palestinian Arabs began to develop a distinct national identity, driven in part by fear sparked by this narrative.

The Deir Yassin story also became a foundational myth for the Israeli left, as David Ben-Gurion’s leadership used accusations of a massacre in political struggles against right-wing figures like Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir.

Drawing on archival materials and eyewitness accounts, Dr. Milstein examines what happened in Deir Yassin, alongside two documented massacres of the period: the killing of Jewish medical personnel in Jerusalem and the massacre of Arabs in Ein Zaytun in the Upper Galilee. He analyzes how the Deir Yassin narrative evolved and who benefited from its spread.

Dr. Milstein, an Israeli historian and former paratrooper, served as the official historian of the paratroops and taught military history at the IDF’s Command and Staff College.
