Beschreibung

It's the 1970s, and a mysterious woman has a cache of letters which claim to tell the story of the death of Fanny Imlay, half-sister of Mary Shelley and daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft. Did Fanny really commit suicide in an inn in Swansea in 1816, as historians thought? The letters instead suggest a faked death and an escape from Fanny's fraught family life. It could have been an independence of which Fanny's mother would have been proud. But the letters also suggest the re-born Fanny remained misunderstood, mis-used and rejected, in the manner of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein's monster.
The women's intertwining narratives begin to reflect each other as the mysteries multiply and resolve. Gothic body-swaps, dark mansions and unexpected deaths merge with 70s politics and feminism in this tour-de-force by Jerwood Prize-winning author Jo Mazelis.
"The Wollstonecraft-Shelley story is a founding myth in Gothic literature; Jo Mazelis tears it to shreds and reassembles it, amid the thick sea mists of south Wales, with Cymbeline and the Manson girls among her dramatic sources." – Geoff Sawers, author of Widdershins Walk

I’m the most feared man on Wall Street…unfortunately, my best friend's little sister hasn’t gotten the memo.
I brandish equations like lightning bolts and shatter fortunes with mere scribbles on a whiteboard. People up and down Wall Street steer clear of me—or come to regret it.
My walls are impenetrable as Alcatraz, and my self-control? Rock solid, my friend.
Except when it comes to her.
The woman I've secretly longed for. The only woman I can never have.
My best friend’s little sister, Stella.
Growing up, she saw me as a heartless robot. It couldn't be further from the truth, but a promise I made to her brother binds me, and my code of honor is as rigid as my isosceles triangle.
I hadn't laid eyes on her for years, but now she's in the heart of Manhattan, and I've unintentionally sent her career into a nosedive. My solution? Offer her a job at my hedge fund.
Suddenly I’m the boss of her, faced daily with her sparkling eyes and gummy worm obsession–and her infuriating refusal to stay away from me.
Well, I buried my feelings for her once before. I’ll do it again—to the nth degree...

A White Heron by Sarah Orne Jewett is a beautifully lyrical and quietly profound short story that explores the tension between nature and progress, innocence and ambition. First published in 1886, this timeless piece of American regionalist literature follows a young girl named Sylvia, who must choose between revealing the location of a rare bird to a visiting ornithologist—or preserving the natural world she so deeply loves.
Set in the lush countryside of rural Maine, Jewett’s story captures the quiet strength of childhood, the majesty of the natural world, and the subtle power of moral conviction. It is both a coming-of-age story and a moving tribute to the beauty and sanctity of nature.
This full audiobook captures the gentle tone and vivid imagery of Jewett’s prose, inviting listeners to slow down and reflect on their connection with the wild and the ethical choices that shape us.

Until the mayor ended up dead.
Until Aunt Trixie’s accused—by the whole town!—of killing the mayor.
