Synopsis

Salammbo is a historical novel by Gustave Flaubert. It is set in Carthage during the 3rd century BC, immediately before and during the Mercenary Revolt which took place shortly after the First Punic War. Flaubert's main source was Book I of Polybius's Histories. It was not a particularly well-studied period of history and required a great deal of work from the author, who enthusiastically left behind the realism of his masterpiece Madame Bovary for this tale of blood and thunder.

After the First Punic War, Carthage is unable to fulfill promises made to its army of mercenaries, and finds itself under attack. The fictional title character, a priestess and the daughter of Hamilcar Barca, an aristocratic Carthaginian general, is the object of the obsessive lust of Matho, a leader of the mercenaries. With the help of the scheming freed slave, Spendius, Matho steals the sacred veil of Carthage, the Zaïmph, prompting Salammbô to enter the mercenaries' camp in an attempt to steal it back. The Zaïmph is an ornate bejewelled veil draped about the statue of the goddess Tanit in the sanctum sanctorum of her temple: the veil is the city's guardian and touching it will bring death to the perpetrator.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
Lieutenant Jim Fraser was, in turns, eager and terrified. His Baker Company led the American offensive to liberate Charleston, but would his wife, Florrie, and their twin girls trapped behind German lines survive the coming battle?
Wolves at the Gate is the first of a series of three alternative history thrillers from Bart Stark imagining another World War II. Due to a twist of history during his youth, Adolf Hitler turns west and out to sea against England and the United States in alliance with fascist Japan and Italy. After the British Empire falls, the Axis turn on an outnumbered and unprepared America. Instead of being waged in far-away lands, total war rages across the Hawaiian Islands and South Carolina, down our streets and into the homes of our families.
Styled as Robert Conroy’s 1942 meets Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain, with the multi-perspective scope of Harry Turtledove’s Worldwar series, Wolves at the Gate is perfect for fans of Philip K. Dick, W.E.B Griffin and Jeff Shaara.
At the time of this writing, Amazon readers awarded the ebook and paperback 101 reviews averaging 4.4 stars. ★★★★½
[T]he first chapter pulls you bodily into a war rather than allowing you to observe it from a distance. The perspective feels less like narration and more like immersion…Every jolt, every flicker of tracer fire, and every near miss vibrates through the prose, giving the battlefield a visceral, tactile immediacy rather than an abstract quality. - DK Marley, The Historical Fiction Company ★★★★
The gripping ElevenLabs AI voice Declan gives the audiobook a new dimension like a cinema newsreel from an all too close front line.

The Adventure of the Tea-Stained Diamonds:
He was not much more than a child. I estimated his age at fourteen. He was a handsome boy, with the raven-black hair and deeply tanned skin color that marks a person who came from the lands under the Raj. His young body was beginning to show the signs of an emerging well-made sportsman. From his place, lying on his back on the pavement, his dark-brown eyes stared up at the morning sky ... lifeless. Behind his head was a pool of blood, now darkened and congealed.
