American Cookery, by Amelia Simmons, was the first known cookbook written by an American, published in 1796. Until this time, the cookbooks printed and used in what became the United States were British cookbooks, so the importance of this book is obvious to American culinary history, and more generally, to the history of America.

The history of India is filled with tales of powerful warrior empires that shaped the destiny of the subcontinent. Among them, the Hoysala Empire, the Rashtrakuta Empire, and the Kakatiya Dynasty stood as formidable forces in the Deccan region, each leaving behind a unique legacy of conquest, governance, and cultural patronage.
The Rashtrakutas, known for their military might, expanded their rule across vast territories, engaging in wars with the Pratiharas and Palas while fostering art and architecture, as seen in the magnificent Kailasanatha temple at Ellora.
The Hoysalas, emerging later, were fierce warriors and master builders, commissioning iconic temples such as those at Belur and Halebidu while defending their kingdom against rival invasions.
The Kakatiya Dynasty, renowned for its defensive strategies, constructed impressive fortifications like the Warangal Fort and resisted repeated invasions, including those from the Delhi Sultanate.
These warrior empires not only fought to expand and defend their territories but also enriched Indian culture, trade, and architecture, leaving an enduring impact on the history of the Deccan.

POKER MATH - Putting the Odds in...

There is no possible way to overestimate the significance of poker math. In the absence of a good understanding of probability and statistics, players are more prone to make judgments solely on their intuition or "feel," which can result in potentially disastrous outcomes. Although intuition can be useful in certain circumstances, it is not a reliable strategy for making decisions that are guaranteed to generate consistent profits. Poker Math offers players a trustworthy framework for making decisions based on the likelihood of specific outcomes in the game of poker.
Probability is regarded as one of the most fundamental ideas in poker mathematics. The study of how likely it is that something will take place is what we mean when we talk about probability. A player's ability to assess the possibility of forming specific hands in poker, the odds of winning a hand based on the amount of outs, and the probability of their opponents holding certain hands requires a grasp of probability. Players can eliminate the need to speculate or rely on their gut instincts by developing an understanding of probability, which enables them to make judgments based on the likelihood of various events.
Consider the following scenario: a player holds a pair of 7s in their pocket, and the flop reads 10-7-2. The player now has a set, which is a very strong hand and one of the best possible outcomes. On the other hand, there is a flush draw on the board, which indicates that if another player has two cards of the same suit, they have a chance to build a flush and beat the player who already has a set. By having a concept of probability, the player is able to compute the likelihood that another player possesses two cards of the same suit and then make a choice based on that information.

A book for anyone who craves making something with their hands.
Slöjd is Swedish for handicrafts. But it's so much more than making things with your hands. In Sweden, slöjd is a compulsory subject taught to all schoolchildren. From a young age, they work with textiles and wood not only to develop their creativity, but also to learn fine motor skills and problem solving – often leading to a lifelong love and appreciation of crafts.
In her new book, Kerstin Neumüller introduces the concept of slöjd through 18 wood and textile projects. Here's everything from learning how to sew a cap, dye yarn with birch leaves, carve a peg rail, sew a patchwork quilt and mend your jeans.
The projects rarely require any big purchases or unusual tools, and you will be guided with clear step-by-step instructions, pictures and illustrations. With the attitude 'if you think it's good, it's good', Kerstin leaves a lot of room for your own creativity to flourish, while she also helps you avoid the worst pitfalls.
This book is suitable both for beginners itching to get started and for those who already know that handicrafts are the most enjoyable hobby you can have!

The Kingdom of Kush - Nubian...

The Kingdom of Kush, an ancient African civilization, flourished along the Nile River in what is now modern-day Sudan. This powerful kingdom played a crucial role in the history of northeastern Africa, often interacting with its northern neighbor, Egypt. The land of Kush was known for its rich natural resources, strategic location, and unique cultural identity, which set it apart from other civilizations of the time.
Geographically, Kush was centered in the region known as Nubia, a stretch of land between the first and sixth cataracts of the Nile. This location provided fertile lands for agriculture, supported by the annual flooding of the river. Unlike Egypt, which relied heavily on the predictable flooding of the Nile, the Kushites also adapted to drier conditions, developing irrigation techniques to sustain their crops. The region was abundant in valuable resources such as gold, ivory, ebony, and exotic animal skins, making it an important trade hub in the ancient world. These resources attracted merchants from Egypt, the Mediterranean, and even as far as the Middle East, contributing to the kingdom's economic strength.
Kushite civilization was heavily influenced by its relationship with Egypt, but it also maintained distinct cultural and political traditions. Early Kushite settlements date back to around 2500 BCE, and by the time of the Egyptian Middle and New Kingdoms, Kush had grown into a formidable power. Egyptian pharaohs often sought control over Nubia due to its wealth, leading to periods of conquest and integration. However, Kush was not merely a passive recipient of Egyptian influence. It developed its own identity, blending Egyptian religious beliefs with native Nubian traditions, which would later be reflected in Kushite art, architecture, and burial practices.
