Beschreibung

In "Preliminary Report on a Visit to the Navaho National Monument, Arizona," Jesse Walter Fewkes presents an insightful exploration of the cultural and archaeological significance of the Navaho National Monument. This meticulously crafted report combines detailed field observations with a vivid narrative style, reflecting Fewkes's scientific rigor and passion for anthropology. The text emerges from the broader context of early 20th-century American archaeology, where burgeoning interest in Native American cultures sought to document and preserve indigenous practices and histories amid growing external pressures from modernity. Fewkes's work stands as a cornerstone in the ethnographic record of the Southwest, juxtaposing scientific inquiry with a deep appreciation for indigenous traditions. Jesse Walter Fewkes was a prominent American archaeologist and ethnologist, recognized for his contributions to the study of Native American cultures. As a member of the Bureau of American Ethnology, his extensive fieldwork spans various tribal communities, reflecting his commitment to understanding their histories and revitalizing interest in their cultural practices. Fewkes's dedication to documenting vivid details of his subjects' lives was likely inspired by the ongoing erosion of native customs at the time. This significant report is recommended for anyone interested in anthropology, Native American studies, or the intricate tapestry of American history. Fewkes's nuanced observations offer readers a rare glimpse into the cultural landscape of the Navaho, making this text essential for scholars and enthusiasts alike.

Creating a Nation That Is Fair for Us All
Cindy Mathers has experienced firsthand the impact of our traumatised, fragmented and broken systems on First Nations people, and indeed us all. She has been mentored by and worked collaboratively with First Nations people for over two decades, learning through respect, deep listening, and truth telling.
After repeated experiences of burnout, she began searching for solutions outside of current systems. Through personal and ancestral healing, extensive research, and study, she learned that the disrespect and disregard of human rights of the First Nations people at the time of colonization created wounds that remain in our collective psyche and are passed down through generations.
In DELVE-ing into Cultural Humility, Mathers shares a learning pathway forward, based on respect and deep listening. She created the DELVE formula as a collaborative way to implement change in our nation:
    ●       Deconstruct—how did we get here as a nation?
    ●       Explore—the impact of abuse of Human Rights on us all
    ●       Listen—and learn, with deep presence to the stories of First Nations people
    ●       Viable—what First Nations-led / collaborative initiatives are working?
    ●       Energise—what works and fund community-led, place-based initiatives
In these pages, you will see a snapshot of what is possible when we engage the DELVE formula. By applying this pathway to her real-life projects and experiences, Mathers has created a succinct and practical resource for those who wish to learn Cultural Humility and become part of creating a new nation that respects the Human Rights of all.

The Art of Horsemanship and On...

Xenophon’s The Art of Horsemanship is a highly unusual text in the corpus of Classical Greek literature. It is a short survey on the various aspects of care for horses as seen by a highly experienced rider from the 5th century BCE. It is particularly notable because so many of its observations are relevant to the modern rider. Xenophon, friend of Socrates and professional soldier, is best known as the author Anabasis, the vivid account of a failed military expedition deep into Persia.

The Art of Horsemanship is very different in tone and content – a practical study from deep personal knowledge gained from working with horses, but none the less fascinating.

Xenophon considers what features and qualities to look for in a horse – among them broad chest, wide nostrils, prominent eye, supple knees, positive manner– and the sound of the hoof, which indicates good feet. (The ancient Greeks did not shoe their horses). There are even useful tips on approaching the horse to avoid conflict. He discusses training over different terrains and many other useful tips. The translator, Morris H. Morgan, provides extensive notes, not just on technical pointers such as mounting without stirrups or saddle, but also by comparing contemporary sculptures where artists took licence over reality. Furthermore, Morgan provides a fascinating essay The Greek Riding-Horse, which is an extended commentary on Xenophon. Also on this recording is Xenophon’s On The Cavalry General, a second treatise on horsemanship, but taking a different perspective.
