Beschreibung

Candid essays on personal and cultural American nostalgia, focusing on the author’s working-class, Rust Belt family history. What does it mean to be nostalgic for the American past? The feeling has been co-opted by the far right (“Make America Great Again,” after all, is a plea for the past), and associated with violent periods of our country’s history when white supremacy was even more dominant than today. Can a liberal white woman still be sentimental about her childhood, her European immigrant family history, her working-class upbringing? In Dreadful Sorry, Jennifer Niesslein explores her “nostalgia problem” with grace and curiosity. The essays recount her thoughts upon rewatching Little Women with her sisters and mother, her hand-to-mouth childhood, the effect being “not the right kind of white” had on her Polish immigrant ancestors in the U.S, and her family’s own racism. Niesslein weaves together personal and structural questions of class, whiteness, history, and family with humor and charisma. A book for anyone who wants to think about their relationship to their childhood, family history, and place.

The words of others, as an unpleasant remark ("You’re not hardworking") or a medical diagnosis ("You’re bipolar"), have the power to plunge us into anguish whenever they show an image of ourselves that we do not recognize: "In a world where words become viruses, certain sentences can kill."
The reductive identity that is thus assigned to us creates the illusion that our life can be summed up by these few words, allowing others to exercise the tyrannical power of anxiety over us.
Max Dorra explains how this illusion, created temporarily by the gaze of others, is just a montage-effect of our memory—as in a movie—and that it is enough to understand the mechanisms of this illusion in order to free ourselves from it: "To become aware of the fact that one is held captive by a montage is to be freed from a false confinement."
In virtuosic and sensitive language ("The affects—shapeless and promising, wonderful clouds"), the author journeys through music, painting and cinema, appealing to sociology, psychoanalysis and philosophy, while remaining firmly rooted in reality: "There are more things in a hospital elevator than in all of philosophy."
He shows us that trusting our imagination allows us to tame anxiety without fearing it, and understanding that "another montage is possible" allows us to go towards the other without losing ourselves.

A compendium of quotes and riffs by P.J. O'Rourke on subjects ranging from government to fishing to apps, to be published on what would have been his seventy-fifth birthday.

When The Penguin Dictionary of Modern Humorous Quotations was published in 1994, P. J. O'Rourke had more entries than any living writer. And he kept writing funny stuff for another twenty-eight years. Now, for the first time, the best material is collected in one volume. Edited by Terry McDonell, The Funny Stuff is arranged in six sections, organized by subject in alphabetical order from Agriculture to Xenophobia. From his earliest days at the National Lampoon in the 1970s, through his classic reporting for Rolling Stone in the '80s and '90s to his post-Trump, pandemic, new media observations of recent years, P. J. produced incisive, amusing copy. Not only did P. J. write memorable one-liners, he also meticulously constructed riffs that are still being quoted years later. His prose has the electric verbal energy of Tom Wolfe or Hunter Thompson, but P. J. is more flat out funny. And through it all comes his clear-eyed take on politics, economics, human nature—and fun. The Funny Stuff is a book for P. J. fans to devour but also a book that will bring new audiences and stand as testament to one of the truly original American writers of the last fifty years.
