In this captivating collection of essays, Tinyiko Maluleke invites his readers on a journey that begins with his eventful boyhood in Soweto and his life-changing upbringing in Limpopo. His heartfelt reflections on the roles of his mother, maternal grandmother and aunts in his childhood will resonate deeply with readers. In the truest sense, this is a 'feminist' book – one that powerfully highlights and celebrates the vital contributions of women to national development.
This memoir traces Maluleke's journey through academia, his rise through the ranks, and the invaluable lessons he learned along the way. Woven into his personal narrative is a broader reflection on the South African experience, inviting readers to reconsider the history of the country – its villages, townships and even their own identities.
Maluleke delivers unflinching analysis of critical issues facing South Africa, blending rigorous scholarship with a masterful command of diverse literary genres and writing styles. More than just a memoir, this book is both a tribute and a testament to the moments, places, and people – both celebrated and unsung – that have shaped his perspective. His incisive profiles of fellow university leaders are particularly compelling.
Faces and Phases of Resilience will make you think, laugh, yell, and cry. More than just a personal memoir, it is the memoir of a country, a historical epoch, and a people – an invitation into the tragedy, beauty and hope that define South Africa.
Forty-nine chapters later, the book closes with a haunting essay on the scourge of xenophobia, culminating in a chillingly titled reflection, 'The Day I Die' – an ironic foretelling of Maluleke's own death – that lingers long after the final page.
A literary treasure trove for seekers of exemplars and of fountains of inspiration. It is an ode to resilience. – DR REUEL J KHOZA

Not My Problem: Life with Chronic Illness, Being Dismissed, and How to Take Back Your Strength is a raw, unfiltered look at what it means to live with a chronic illness in a world that often refuses to understand. Caitlyn Ursillo shares her deeply personal journey with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), a condition that turned her world upside down overnight. Through heartbreakingly honest storytelling, she exposes the gaslighting, medical dismissal, and societal misconceptions that countless people with chronic illnesses endure every day.
From a seemingly routine virus that spiraled into a life-altering diagnosis, to the moments of frustration, grief, and resilience that followed, Caitlyn’s story is one of both struggle and triumph. She challenges the damaging narratives that paint chronic illness as a “choice” or “laziness” and highlights the invisible battles fought behind closed doors—whether it’s pushing through symptoms to care for her son, advocating for herself in doctor’s offices, or simply trying to be understood.
This book is more than just a memoir; it’s a battle cry for those who have been dismissed, a guide for navigating the maze of medical bureaucracy, and a beacon of solidarity for anyone feeling lost in their health journey. With warmth, humor, and unflinching honesty, Caitlyn reminds readers that their pain is real, their fight is valid, and their strength is immeasurable.
For anyone who has ever been told “it’s all in your head,” this book is proof that it’s not—and that you are not alone.

The story of life on a French olive farm continues with this moving memoir of hard work, hard luck, and waiting for the return of happiness. Carol Drinkwater and her husband, Michel, arrive at their villa in Provence in anticipation of another glorious summer. Unfortunately, they find the farm unkempt and suffering from lack of rainfall. When their gardener, Monsieur Quashia, finally shows up, he cheerfully explains the shed-building project he’s working on as a surprise for them—a surprise that will send their expenses skyrocketing. But there are bigger problems to come than wild boars tearing through fences and other everyday challenges of farming. After a terrifying accident in Monte Carlo and a hospital stay, Michel is barely functional, and Carol soon realizes she must fend for herself. Burdened with problems from a financial reversal to the threat of nearby wildfires, she will experience firsthand the uncertainties that have plagued farmers since the dawn of agriculture—and hold on to hope that in the end, nature will provide. “A storyteller of great economy and deftness.” —The Telegraph

“I stand and face the sea,
as the waves come crashing to the shore,
the music of the sea is thunderous and loud.
Yet I am unafraid, I chase the waves, I run about,
excited but calm, I want to explore, I only want more.”
    —fifi coo, 11 June 2016

After eight years of quiet, fifi coo found his voice through the collective love of a family, the patience and resourcefulness of a mother, and a simple alphabet board. The board became the interface between fifi’s thoughts and the public world beyond him. With it, he speaks poetry.

    —
How open are we to specialness in our lives? Open the door to the tiny spaces within you, and let in fifi coo’s inner light.

    A note from fifi

For parents whose hearts are in deep sorrow, I only wish my poems will offer them hope and encouragement for themselves and for their child to one day find his/her voice.

For teachers, therapists and those who have a duty or a job to help special needs individuals lead a more fulfilling life, I hope my book will encourage them to explore new ways of teaching and to not label us as low functioning if we are non-verbal. I hope my book will also help them see that understanding autism cannot be based on theories and experiences with other non-verbal autistics. I hope my book makes them rethink what autism is about and that whatever questions they have about autism, the only person that can give them real answers will be the individual that they are trying to help.

For anyone else who might read my book, I hope they will hear inside my heart and hear my loneliness and experience what it is like to be a human person frequently misunderstood and trapped in a body that is not very functional. I hope I can be a lonely voice for all my non-verbal friends. We experience loneliness in a way that no one can ever understand unless they too lose their voices and have special needs.
