Beschreibung

"Vanishing Ships" explores the compelling topic of maritime mysteries, specifically focusing on vessels that have disappeared without a trace. These unsettling events serve as stark reminders of the unpredictable nature of the sea and the inherent dangers faced by sailors. The book delves into historical accounts of ship disappearances, examining potential explanations ranging from severe weather to navigational errors, while also acknowledging the enduring allure of the unknown.

The book presents a framework combining historical accounts, oceanographic principles, and forensic analysis to investigate these nautical enigmas. For instance, cases like the Mary Celeste and the USS Cyclops are examined with a focus on factual evidence to avoid sensationalism. It progresses by first introducing the core concepts of maritime disappearance, then examining specific unsolved cases, and finally exploring various theories, including plausible and speculative ideas, always emphasizing scientific rigor.

This book offers a unique perspective by bridging the gap between historical research, marine science, and forensic investigation, appealing to those interested in maritime history, true crime, and the intersection of science and mystery. By understanding the potential causes of past disappearances, the book implicitly suggests lessons that can be applied to modern maritime safety practices.

Martha Nussbaum is one of the most influential philosophers of our time, particularly known for her contributions to feminist theory, political philosophy, and ethics. A professor at the University of Chicago, her work spans a wide array of topics including justice, human capabilities, human rights, and the role of emotions in moral decision-making. Nussbaum’s ideas have significantly impacted both academic philosophy and practical policy, with her innovative theories offering valuable insights into the intersection of ethics, politics, and human development.
At the heart of Nussbaum’s intellectual journey is the development of the capabilities approach, a framework she co-created with economist Amartya Sen. This approach is centered on the idea that justice should be evaluated based on individuals’ abilities to function and achieve various important life goals, rather than simply on income or wealth. The capabilities approach emphasizes human dignity and focuses on the conditions that allow people to live lives they have reason to value. It challenges traditional views of social justice by broadening the scope of what constitutes a flourishing life beyond mere economic success.
Nussbaum’s feminist philosophy is also pivotal in understanding her work. As an advocate for gender equality, she has critiqued traditional philosophical frameworks that have marginalized women’s voices and experiences. Her feminist perspective emphasizes the importance of recognizing the diverse and often undervalued roles that women play in society, and she works toward reshaping institutions to ensure that women’s capabilities are supported and nurtured. Nussbaum argues that feminism is not just about advocating for women’s rights but also about advancing a more inclusive and just society for all people, regardless of gender.

An acclaimed sociologist's exploration of the connections among performances in life, art, and politics

In The Performer, Richard Sennett explores the relations between performing in art (particularly music), politics, and everyday experience. It focuses on the bodily and physical dimensions of performing, rather than on words. Sennett is particularly attuned to the ways in which the rituals of ordinary life are performances.

The book draws on history and sociology, and more personally on the author’s early career as a professional cellist, as well as on his later work as a city planner and social thinker. It traces the evolution of performing spaces in the city; the emergence of actors, musicians, and dancers as independent artists; the inequality between performer and spectator; the uneasy relations between artistic creation and social and religious ritual; the uses and abuses of acting by politicians. The Janus-faced art of performing is both destructive and civilizing.

    A Week in September

Through a precious cache of WWII letters, a story of war is revealed. But also, most movingly, a story of love, resilience and survival, from award-winning and bestselling writer, Peter Rees and Sue Langford..

'Profoundly moving ... I don't mind saying I wept at the end, for all the young men lost to war, their widows and children ... a lovely book.' The Australian
Doug Heywood was a teenager when he discovered, in a shoebox hidden in a wardrobe, hundreds of letters, all written by his father, Scott Heywood. As a POW on the infamous Burma Railway, Scott wrote almost daily to his young wife, Margery, on scraps of paper that had to be hidden from guards. These letters tell of an enduring love – and also, intriguingly, of how Scott dealt with the most brutally testing circumstances.
Scott's story has echoes of another story happening 7000 kilometres away at the same time. Viktor Frankl, a psychiatrist, was rounded up with his family and sent to Auschwitz in September 1942. Frankl later wrote in his classic book Man's Search for Meaning that the last of the human freedoms was the ability 'to choose one's attitude in any set of circumstances'. Scott Heywood and Viktor Frankl, on opposite sides of the world, found their own ways to survive that were uncannily similar.
This is the untold story of one man, one ordinary man, and his war. Woven through it is Margery's story, as she waited anxiously with their two young children in rural Victoria, trapped in an emotional rollercoaster, unaware that he was writing letters to her that could not be posted. This is a powerful and moving story of love, resilience and survival.
