  We take time for granted as it passes during every moment of our existence. Other things may change, but time remains constant and predictable. The past, the present, and the future exist within a harmonious, reliable, and never-changing system. Or at least that’s how it seems… 
  It was Albert Einstein who, in 1905, first theorized that time might not be quite as straightforward as that. In one of the most influential papers on physics ever published, he proposed something called “time dilatation.” This suggested that time was neither fixed nor constant and that the passage of time was related to the relative speed of the observer.  
  Long before the advent of modern science and Einstein's theory of relativity, people have contemplated time traveling, and there are still debates about the concept today. During the 20th century, new theories of the multiverse suggested that our world isn’t discrete and separate but perhaps one of an unimaginable number of other universes, separated by membranes that may be possible to see or even pass through. These ideas are difficult to grasp, but as theoretical physicist Werner Heisenberg put it succinctly, “Not only is the Universe stranger than we think, it is stranger than we can think.”  
  Despite so many popular depictions in literature and movies, it is widely assumed that nobody has built a working time machine, but ordinary people have insisted that they’ve experienced odd events during which they found themselves in another time. Some of these experiences have been reported by seemingly rational individuals, and some have involved more than one witness. The conventional view is that all these people are either deluded or mistaken, even though others have found some of these accounts strangely compelling.

  This book is a sequel to Rude Awakenings which began the account of a six-month epic journey by two Englishmen, a monk and layman, around the Buddhist holy places in India. Rude Awakenings was a great adventure story. 
  While the second part of the journey still had its share of adventure, and some amazing encounters with wildlife including tiger, the novelty of the endeavour had worn off, and the two pilgrims came face to face with both their own and the other’s deeper humanity. 
  Thus Great Patient One is, for both Ajahn Sucitto and Nick, the more valuable of the two accounts, as in this volume they share their deeper lessons and the powerful resolution of the journey they both experienced at its end.

  In ancient Greece, “no other practice was so universal than the consultation of oracles.” These holy sites were found in 260 locations around the Greek-speaking world, and they were considered the “most satisfactory means of ascertaining the future.” These sanctuaries were “set apart from the profane, ordinary world” and were in the beginning restricted to natural locations where the divine was thought to be “especially present.” They were set aside for special spiritual functions, and a state of purity was generally required of its participants. A historical tendency toward providing haven for criminals was based on the fear of shedding blood in a holy place, and the “fear that the evil magic would emanate from his curse.” 
  The Oracle of Delphi was one of the greatest religious institutions in Greece and one which played a significant role not only in the formation and collective decisions of Hellenic localities and city-states but also in the personal lives of Greeks known and unknown. The site was dedicated to the god Apollo, and the Greeks believed the god spoke his oracles through his prophetess known as the Pythia. The judgments and decisions rendered by the oracle were so important to the Greeks that they often put them above all other interests, even security threats posed by the likes of the Persians, and Delphi was popular even amongst outsiders. Many authors of antiquity mention the oracle for one reason or another, and there even survive epigraphic collections that preserve the god’s words on stone. 
  The Oracle of Dodona was the oldest of all, and it was one of the few dedicated to Zeus and his consort goddess Dione. The oracular utterances heard at the oracles are generally referred to as “smokiness” in Greek, but at Dodona, the answers came in natural sounds and other peripheral phenomena.
