Book Description

Cortex-M has been around since 2004, so why a new book now? With new microcontrollers based on the Cortex-M55 and Cortex-M85 being introduced this year, Cortex-M continues to expand. New software concepts, such as standardized software reuse, have emerged alongside new topics including security and machine learning. Development methodologies have also significantly advanced, with more embedded development taking place in the cloud and increased levels of automation. Due to these advances, a single engineer can no longer understand an entire project and requires new skills to be successful. This book provides a unique view of how to navigate and apply the latest concepts in microcontroller development. The book is split into two parts. First, you’ll be guided through how to select the ideal set of hardware, software, and tools for your specific project. Next, you’ll explore how to implement essential topics for modern embedded developers. Throughout the book, there are examples for you to learn by working with real Cortex-M devices with all software available on GitHub. You will gain experience with the small Cortex-M0+, the powerful Cortex-M55, and more Cortex-M processors.By the end of this book, you’ll be able to practically apply modern Cortex-M software development concepts.

What you will learn

Familiarize yourself with heuristics to identify the right components for your Cortex-M project

Boot code to efficiently start up a Cortex-M device

Optimize algorithms with compilers, middleware, and other means

Get to grips with machine learning frameworks and implementation techniques

Understand security in the embedded space with solutions like TrustZone and TF-M

Explore cloud-based development methodologies to increase efficiency

Dive into continuous integration frameworks and best practices

Identify future trends that could impact Cortex-M software development

Who this book is for

This book is for practicing engineers and students working with embedded and IoT systems who want to quickly learn how to develop quality software for Arm Cortex-M processors without reading long technical manuals. If you’re looking for a book that explains C or assembly language programming for the purpose of creating a single application or mastering a type of programming such as digital signal processing algorithms, then this book is NOT for you. A basic understanding of embedded hardware and software, along with general C programming skills will assist with understanding the concepts covered in this book.

In the opening essay, National Book Award finalist Lydia Millet mourns the end of the Saguaro cacti in her Arizona backyard due to drought. Later, Omar El Akkad contemplates how the rise of temperatures in the Middle East is destroying his home and the wellspring of his art. Gabrielle Bellot reflects on how a bizarre lionfish invasion devastated the coral reef near her home in the Caribbean—a precursor to even stranger events to come. Traveling through Nebraska, Terese Svoboda witnesses cougars running across highways and showing up in kindergartens.

As the stories unfold—from Antarctica to Australia, New Hampshire to New York—an intimate portrait of a climate-changed world emerges, captured by writers whose lives jostle against incongruous memories of familiar places that have been transformed in startling ways.

This book contains the following titles:
Botany - Botany, the scientific study of plants, forms the cornerstone of our understanding of the natural world and is crucial to numerous fields such as agriculture, medicine, and environmental science. Plants are integral to life on Earth, providing oxygen, food, and raw materials. They play a fundamental role in the planet's ecosystems, supporting biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance. By examining plants in-depth, botany reveals their structures, functions, and the intricate relationships they have with other living organisms. At its core, botany seeks to answer key questions about how plants grow, develop, reproduce, and adapt to their environments. This branch of biology explores a wide range of plant life, from the microscopic algae and fungi to towering trees and flowering plants. The study of plants extends beyond their mere anatomy and physiology; it also includes their evolutionary history, classification, and their interactions with both biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors.
Sustainability - Sustainability refers to the practice of maintaining processes and systems that support the well-being of both current and future generations. It encompasses a broad range of disciplines, from ecology and economics to social equity, focusing on long-term balance and responsible use of resources. At its core, sustainability strives for harmony between the environment, society, and economy, ensuring that each of these areas is addressed in ways that do not compromise the others. In the environmental context, sustainability involves careful management of natural resources to ensure that ecosystems remain viable for generations to come. This includes minimizing waste, reducing pollution, and encouraging the responsible use of land, water, and energy resources.

Genes, although tiny and imperceptible, play a pivotal role in shaping our physical characteristics, unless modified by medical intervention. Originating from the first man and woman, genes come in various types, with Y-Chromosomes and mtdna being extensively studied by geneticists. Y-DNA is inherited exclusively from fathers to sons, perpetuating through generations of male lineage, while mtdna is passed from mothers to all their offspring, albeit only daughters can transmit it further. The classification of Y-DNA and mtdna into letters helps delineate the genetic relationships across different populations and regions. However, these genetic markers often exhibit a mosaic distribution due to intermarriages, conflicts, and migrations throughout history. Despite these diversifications, humanity remains fundamentally linked to its ancestral roots, with distant connections to the original progenitors persisting through millennia of genetic mingling. Thus, while genetic variations have enriched our species over time, our collective genetic heritage underscores the profound interconnectedness among human populations worldwide.

Malaria is one of the world’s most enduring and devastating infectious diseases, with a history that spans thousands of years. It is caused by a parasite from the genus Plasmodium and transmitted to humans through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. The disease affects millions of people annually, with the greatest burden in sub-Saharan Africa, though it also impacts parts of Asia, Latin America, and other regions. Despite decades of global efforts to control it, malaria remains a major public health crisis, with significant social, economic, and health-related consequences.
Historically, malaria has been a silent killer, often misunderstood and underreported due to its symptoms’ similarity to those of other illnesses, such as flu or viral infections. For centuries, it was a mystery to scientists and physicians, who struggled to understand its causes and transmission. It was not until the late 19th century that the true nature of malaria was discovered, when scientists like Sir Ronald Ross uncovered the link between mosquitoes and the spread of the disease. This discovery laid the foundation for subsequent efforts in prevention and treatment.
The global burden of malaria is staggering, with estimates suggesting that over 200 million cases occur each year, resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths, mostly among children under five years old. The impact of malaria goes beyond just the number of cases and deaths; it also affects economic development. Countries heavily burdened by malaria face reduced productivity, increased healthcare costs, and hindered education, as children and adults alike are repeatedly affected by the disease.

Scammers aren’t just getting smarter — they’re getting personal. Fooled: Inside the World of Scams and How to Fight Back pulls back the curtain on the modern con, showing how good, honest people get caught in bad deals, fake investments, and digital traps that look too real to question.
Written by serial entrepreneur Joel Bouck, who’s been burned and fought his way back, Fooled blends real-life stories with practical recovery strategies. You’ll meet victims who lost fortunes, families who fell for “voice clones,” and investors blindsided by people they trusted. Each story ends with the tools and mindset you need to protect yourself — and those you love — from the next hit.
This isn’t another fear-based true-crime story. It’s a guide for rebuilding confidence after loss, recognizing manipulation before it happens, and creating your own digital armor in an AI-driven world.
