Beschreibung

Not all heroines are bold. Some change the world with quiet courage.

In Mansfield Park, Jane Austen offers one of her most profound and socially observant novels. Follow Fanny Price, a poor young girl raised in her wealthy relatives' grand estate, as she navigates family tension, romantic entanglements, and questions of integrity in a world obsessed with status.

Often overlooked but deeply rewarding, this novel explores the contrast between virtue and vanity, making it one of Austen's most morally layered works.

A collection of thirty short stories that move along the edges of the existential and the social, the tender and the ironic. Set against the backdrop of Greece, and drawing deeply from its unique spirit and contradictions, each story reveals a subtle fracture in the surface of daily life, where a person confronts themselves, the systems that enclose them, and the illusions they invent just to endure.
These are finely tuned explorations of the human psyche—part microscope, part mirror—unveiling the quiet absurdities we all share. In this space, reason withdraws, cynicism smirks, and mistakes are no longer silent; they speak, take on form, and, inevitably, a face.

Much like his stories for children, Vsevolod Garshin's grownup prose may not always be easy to read due to difficult subject matter he tends to pick for his narratives. It is, however, always beautifully written and fascinating.

Jules needed a fresh start, that's why she moved halfway across the world to attend college in Seoul. What she didn't need was to get pregnant. Being pregnant was not part of the plan, neither was finding her Prince Charming. But when her happily ever after turns out not to be who he says he is, Jules is left heartbroken and jaded. Left with no one else to turn to but her mother, Cora, Jules finds herself heading back to the US to the coastal town of Oak Harbor. She's dreading the looks of disappointments and questions that she knows will be waiting for her. When her ex shows up unannounced, she receives new and shocking information that makes her question everything.

Cora is also struggling to accept that she is about to lose another parent in such a short period of time along with her youngest daughter being pregnant and secretive about who the father is. Why is all of this happening now? She was just settling into her new life after a nasty divorce—still it seems the fates are not through with her yet. Her doubts put her relationship with Jamie to the test and she calls for a pause to deal with her family problems.

Will Cora and Jules be able to resolve their issues? Will Cora come to accept losing the woman that she has loved so much and give in to love without hesitation? Will Jules get her happily ever after?

The Russian novel has a reputation that is immense, both in narrative and in length. Unquestionably though the ideas, themes and characters make many novels rightly revered as world class, as icons of literature.

Perhaps an easier way to enjoy a wider selection of the Russian heritage, with its varied and glorious literary talents, is with the short story. These gems sparkle and beguile the mind with their characters and narrative, exploring facets of society and the human condition that more Western authors somehow find more difficult to navigate, or to explore, explain and relate to.

The Russian short story is, in many respects, in a genre of its own. It is at its captivating best whether it’s an exploration of real-life experiences, through fantasy and fables and on to total absurdity.

In a land so vast it is unsurprising that it is a world almost unto itself. Cultures and landscapes of differing hues are packed together bound only by the wilful bonds and force of Empire.

The stories in this collection traverse the decades where one might be a serf under an absolute monarch, and the reality of that was pretty near to slavery, into an emancipation of sorts in the fields, or towns under the despotic will of landowners and the rich into the upheavals of Empire and then the overthrow of the ruling class and its replacement by the communists, who promised equality for all and delivered a society where the down-trodden remained the lowest yet vital cog of the state machine and its will.

Whilst Tolstoy, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Pushkin and Chekhov are a given in any Russian collection we also explore and include Andreyev, Korolenko, Turgenev, Blavatsky and many others to create a world rich and dense across a sprawling landscape of diverse people, riddled with the class and unfairness in perhaps some of the most turbulent times that Russia has ever experienced.
