Synopsis

"One of the greatest pleasures of my long life on the plains was my intimate friendship with Hugh Monroe, or Rising Wolf, whose tale of his first experiences upon the Saskatchewan-Missouri River plains is set forth in Rising Wolf just as I had it from him before the lodge fires of the long ago. At first an engagé of the Hudson's Bay Company, then of the American Fur Company, and finally free trapper, Hugh Monroe saw more "new country" and had more adventures than most of the early men of the West. During the last years of his long life he lived much with his grandson, William Jackson, ex-Custer scout, who was my partner, and we loved to have him with us. Slender of figure, and not tall, blue-eyed and once brown-haired, he must have been in his time a man of fine appearance. Honest he was and truthful. Kind of heart and brave. A good Christian, too, and yet with no small faith in the gods of his Blackfoot people. And he was a man of tremendous vitality. Up to the very last he went about with his loved flintlock gun, trapping beavers and shooting an occasional deer. He died in his ninety-eighth year, and we buried him in the Two Medicine Valley, under the shadow of the cliffs over which he had so many times helped the Pi-kun-i stampede herds of buffalo to their death, and in sight of that great, sky-piercing height of red rock on the north side of the Two Medicine Lake, which we named Rising Wolf Mountain. It is a fitting monument to the man who was the first of his race to see it, and the great expanse it overlooks." Contents: With the Hudson's Bay Company The Sun-Glass Hunting with Red Crow A Fight with the River People Buffalo Hunting Camping on Arrow River The Crows attack the Blackfeet In the Yellow River Country The Coming of Cold Maker Making Peace with the Crows

Criminology is the scientific study of crime, criminals, and the criminal justice system. It examines the nature, causes, and consequences of criminal behavior, seeking to understand why individuals engage in crime and how society responds to such acts. Criminology is not limited to merely studying criminal acts, but also investigates the societal reactions to crime, the policies implemented to combat it, and the broader impact on social structures. As a multidisciplinary field, criminology draws upon theories and methods from sociology, psychology, law, and political science, making it a vital area of study for both academic and practical purposes.
The evolution of criminology dates back to ancient civilizations, where crime and punishment were often directly linked to religious or cultural beliefs. In these early stages, crime was seen as a moral failing or an act that required divine intervention. However, as societies progressed, the understanding of crime became more secular and focused on the individual and social factors influencing criminal behavior. During the 18th century, the field of criminology began to take shape with the introduction of the Classical School of Criminology, which argued that individuals have free will and make rational decisions based on pleasure and pain. This theory laid the foundation for modern criminal law and criminal justice systems.

MAYA BLUE: A Memoir of Survival is Working Girl meets Taken, a true story of love, cocaine, abduction, and survival, and in the end, Brenda Coffee is the last one standing. Recipient of the coveted Kirkus starred review and nominated for the prestigious 2025 Kirkus Prize, MAYA BLUE is a memoir that reads like a thriller, a compelling, fast-paced story that underscores the power of our voice.
"It was a fairy tale until it wasn't... " For a long time, that's what successful businesswoman Brenda Coffee told herself whenever she dared to look back on her twenties and thirties. The memories of what really happened were hidden in the back of her emotional closet.
At twenty-one, Brenda did almost anything her charismatic and powerful older husband, Philip Ray, wanted. Regardless of whether it was dangerous, adventurous, sexual, or illegal, she wanted to be the one woman he couldn’t live without. With unflinching honesty and written and narrated in first person present, Brenda pulls the listener into the life she once lived—and all the secrecy, madness, trauma, abuse, and danger that came with a brilliant and revered husband who learned to make cocaine in the basement, and after his death, when Brenda was taken at gunpoint in Guatemala.
The author has narrated this powerful and moving memoir, and at times, she breaks down in tears. MAYA BLUE is an inspiring reminder of our universal capacity to survive the unspeakable.

Early on a wartime winter's morning in 1941, the 8,000-ton cargo ship SS Politician ran aground in the beautiful but treacherous seas of Scotland's Outer Hebrides. Among its cargo were 260,000 bottles of whisky destined for the American market – a godsend to the local Eriskay islanders whose home-grown supply had dried up due to wartime rationing.
News quickly spread and boats came from as far as Lewis, and before local excise officer Charles McColl could intervene, more than 24,000 bottles had been 'rescued'. Villages were raided as bottles of whisky were hidden in the most ingenious ways – or simply drunk to get rid of the evidence. Meanwhile, official salvage operations foundered, and in order to pre-vent what the islanders themselves regarded as legitimate salvage, the hull of the Politician was dynamited.
The story is well known through Compton Mackenzie's bestselling book Whisky Galore and the famous 1949 Ealing comedy of the same name. In this book, acclaimed journalist and Hebridean expert Roger Hutchinson tells the true story of one of the most bizarre events ever to have happened in Scottish waters.

    Pigeons - The Fascinating Saga...

A "quirky, endlessly entertaining" look at the surprising history of the pigeon (Simon Winchester).

Domesticated since the dawn of man, pigeons have been used as crucial communicators in war by every major historical superpower from ancient Egypt to the United States and are credited with saving thousands of lives. They have been worshipped as fertility goddesses and revered as symbols of peace. Charles Darwin relied heavily on pigeons to help formulate and support his theory of evolution. Yet today they are reviled as "rats with wings."

To research this lively history of the humble pigeon, the author traveled across the United States and Europe to meet with pigeon fanciers and pigeon haters in a quest to find out how we came to misunderstand one of mankind’s most helpful and steadfast companions. Pigeons captures a Brooklyn man's quest to win the Main Event (the pigeon world's equivalent of the Kentucky Derby), as well as a convention dedicated to breeding the perfect bird. The author participates in a live pigeon shoot where entrants pay $150; he tracks down Mike Tyson, the nation's most famous pigeon lover; he spends time with Queen Elizabeth's Royal Pigeon Handler; and he sheds light on a radical "pro-pigeon underground" in New York City. In Pigeons, Andrew D. Blechman reveals for the first time the remarkable story behind this seemingly unremarkable bird.
