Beschreibung

In "The Old English Dramatists," James Russell Lowell presents a thoughtful and engaging exploration of the significant playwrights from the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, encapsulating the richness and complexity of early English drama. The book showcases Lowell's adept literary style, characterized by eloquent prose and keen insights, which serve to contextualize these dramatists within the broader scope of literary history. Through a series of critical essays, Lowell examines the thematic intricacies, character development, and social reflections inherent in the works of figures such as Shakespeare, Jonson, and Middleton, emphasizing their enduring contributions to the fabric of English literature. James Russell Lowell, a prominent American poet, critic, and essayist of the 19th century, was profoundly influenced by the literary movements of his time, as well as by his Harvard education and engagement with the transcendentalist ideals. His background in both poetry and criticism allowed him to approach the dramatists with a unique perspective, blending admiration with critical analysis. Lowell's intellect and passion for language deeply inform his interpretations, encouraging readers to reconsider the relevance of these classic works in a contemporary context. This scholarly work is highly recommended for readers interested in the evolution of English theatre and drama. "The Old English Dramatists" not only serves as a critical resource for understanding these playwrights but also as an invitation to appreciate the intricate tapestry of human experience they seek to portray, making it essential reading for both students and enthusiasts of literature.

Benjamin "Ben" Jonson was born in June, 1572. A contemporary of William Shakespeare, he is best known for his satirical plays; Volpone, The Alchemist, and Bartholomew Fair, and his equally accomplished lyric poems.
A man of vast reading and a seemingly insatiable appetite for controversy, including time in jail and a penchant for switching faiths, Jonson had an unparalleled breadth of influence on Jacobean and Caroline playwrights and poets.
In 1616 Jonson was appointed by King James I to receive a yearly pension of £60 to become what is now recognised as the post of the first official Poet Laureate.
He died on the 6th of August, 1637 at Westminster and is buried in the north aisle of the nave at Westminster Abbey.
A master of both playwriting and poetry his reputation continues to endure and reach a new audience with each succeeding generation.
