Beschreibung

"The Writings of James Madison" presents a monumental nine-volume collection meticulously edited by Gaillard Hunt, offering readers an exhaustive exploration of the public papers, private correspondence, and Federalist Papers of James Madison, one of America's esteemed Founding Fathers. Beginning with Volume 1, covering the years from 1769 to 1783, readers are immersed in Madison's formative years, witnessing his intellectual growth and early engagement with political discourse. This volume includes foundational documents such as the Constitution of Virginia, providing insights into Madison's evolving political philosophy and his contributions to shaping the course of American history. Volumes 2 and 3 delve into the critical period leading up to the drafting of the United States Constitution and Madison's pivotal role in the Constitutional Convention of 1787. These volumes offer a firsthand account of the debates and deliberations that culminated in the creation of the Constitution, showcasing Madison's intellect and statesmanship. Subsequent volumes continue the exploration of Madison's life and work, covering his tenure as Secretary of State under President Thomas Jefferson, his presidency during the War of 1812, and his post-presidential years. Throughout these volumes, readers gain insight into Madison's diplomatic endeavors, political philosophy, and interactions with key figures of his time, including Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and Marquis de Lafayette. Spanning a significant period of American history, from the pre-Revolutionary War era to the early 19th century, these volumes offer unparalleled insights into the political, constitutional, and philosophical developments that shaped the nation. As a primary source collection, "The Writings of James Madison" serves as a cornerstone for understanding the principles of American democracy, the evolution of constitutional thought, and the complexities of governance in a nascent republic.

This is a Pariyatti audiobook of Bodhi Leaves No. 157, "The Bodhisattva Concept" by A.G.S. Kariyawasam found in the Pariyatti Edition of Collected Bodhi Leaves Vol. V.

    Excerpt from The Bodhisattva Concept:

In original Pali Buddhism, the term bodhisatta is used more or less exclusively to designate Gautama Buddha prior to his enlightenment.

'The concept of bodhisattva, along with that of Buddha and of the cakravartin (world-ruler), was in vogue in India even before the appearance of Gautama Buddha. When Prince Siddhārtha, who later became Gautama Buddha, took conception in the womb of Queen Māyā, a seer predicted that Suddhodana’s future son would be either a world-ruler (cakravartin) or a Buddha. Once, answering a question by a brahmin, the Buddha himself admitted that he is neither a god nor a yakkha, but a Buddha, meaning thereby one of a succession of Buddhas (A II 38).

The Arawak people trace their origins to the vast and resource-rich region of the Orinoco River basin in present-day Venezuela. As part of the larger Arawakan language family, they were one of the many groups that gradually expanded across South America and into the Caribbean. Their migration was driven by a combination of environmental factors, population growth, and the search for fertile land and abundant resources. Over generations, they navigated rivers, coastlines, and open waters, eventually settling in the islands of the Greater and Lesser Antilles, where they established thriving communities.
Archaeological evidence suggests that the Arawak migration into the Caribbean began around 2000 BCE, with the earliest settlements appearing in the Guianas and Trinidad before spreading to islands such as Hispaniola, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. The seafaring skills of the Arawak were instrumental in their expansion, allowing them to cross large distances using well-crafted dugout canoes. These vessels, some of which could carry dozens of people, enabled them to transport goods, establish trade networks, and maintain cultural connections between islands.
The Arawak developed a rich cultural identity deeply connected to their environment. They were skilled agriculturalists, cultivating staple crops such as cassava, maize, sweet potatoes, and fruits like guava and pineapple. Their farming methods, including slash-and-burn techniques and mound cultivation, allowed them to sustain large populations and support the growth of permanent villages. In addition to agriculture, they engaged in fishing and hunting, making use of the diverse ecosystems found throughout the Caribbean.
