Synopsis

Foreign correspondent Richard Brady arrives in Africa on a strict assignment to document the nationalist insurgency that has taken hold of a once-beautiful country. Arriving on the ground with few leads, he is soon courted by people on both sides of the fight.Of particular interest to Richard is Patience, a young township teacher with a sharp wit and an even sharper tongue. But his conscience is tested when he discovers that Patience is helping to smuggle boys across the border and recruiting her students to join the guerrilla army. Seduced by both Patience and the African landscape, but with the dangers of war growing ever closer, Richard’s future begins to look increasingly uncertain. In a country shadowed by civil war, can true love conquer all? Love in a Lost Land is a timeless love story, set against a turbulent backdrop of war, betrayal, and the fight for freedom.

On the Eve appeared in 1860, two years before Fathers and Sons, Turgenev's most famous novel. It is set in the prior decade (by the end of the novel, the Crimean War (1853-56) has already broken out. It centers on the young Elena Nikolaevna Stakhov, daughter of Nikolai Arteyemvitch and Anna Vassilyevna Stahov. Misunderstood by both her parents (Nikolai Artemyevitch is at least as interested in his German mistress as in members of her family) she is on friendly terms with both the would-be professor Andrei Petrovitch Bersenyev and the rising young sculptor Pavel Yakovitch Shubin, both of whom might be -- or might not be -- in love with her. The appearance of Dmitri Nikanorovitch Insarov, a young Bulgarian revolutionary who seeks independence for his nation,, alters the balance of her relationships however. The book is praised, among other things, for the way in which Turgenev manages to describe the varying emotions of a girl on the verge of womanhood. But it is also a portrayal of a kind of youthful Russian society striving towards a modern cosmopolitanism, that will shake off the parochialism and narrowness of its elders. A geopolitical note: Bulgaria was, at the time, still part of the decaying Ottoman empire in the Balkans, but already the vultures were circling -- Russia, Britain, and France -- hoping to get what they could when the collapse came. Hence, in large part, the coming of the Crimean War, hence the Balkan conflicts of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, hence in part World War I, and ultimately the Balkan wars of the late twentieth century (Kosovo, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, etc. etc.). In the nation of Halcyon, your worth is measured by the Mercy Index, and empathy is an offense punishable by death.
Sybil Snow is a senior archivist who has spent her life perfecting the art of absolute invisibility. Haunted by the public execution of her mother for the crime of "unsanctioned devotion," Sybil survives by processing the transactional apologies of starving citizens, remaining a flawless gear in the Ministry of Redress. But her carefully curated, terrifyingly obedient existence shatters when a heavily encrypted ghost file materializes on her terminal. The anomaly contains a single terrifying directive: transfer to the hidden orchard, purge primary identifiers, retain phantom metrics.
Now thrust into the crosshairs of Zayden Yates, a deeply corrupt official who manipulates the Index for elite wealth, Sybil is dangerously cornered. Her only lifeline comes in the form of Declan Cline, the Ministry's most feared compliance auditor—who reveals himself as a desperate saboteur operating from the inside. Together, they must navigate a subterranean labyrinth of deadly surveillance, dark secrets, and decaying paper records to expose a monstrous state conspiracy.
Fans of gripping Dystopian Fiction will be utterly consumed by this dark, atmospheric thriller. Blending elements of a high-stakes political conspiracy with the terrifying surveillance tropes of a totalitarian society, this story is perfect for listeners who crave Orwellian stakes, post-apocalyptic urban settings, and a slow-burn battle against an omnipotent government.
With a beautifully calculated, cinematic storytelling style, John Newbill delivers a masterclass of psychological tension, bureaucratic horror, and rebellion.

THE BINOMIAL ASTEROID PROBLEM. The deadly final encounter between Professor Moriarty and Sherlock Holmes took place at Reichenbach Falls on 4 May 1891. But when was their first encounter? When did Holmes first come to know that there was a evil genius behind a massive web of crime? This new story answers that question. What began with nothing more than a stolen Gladstone bag on wheels quickly escalates into murder and more. And if Holmes and Watson do not move fast enough, it could become much worse. This new story is a tribute -- a 'prequal' -- to the Canonical story of The Final Problem.
