Synopsis

A money-hungry ex-soldier in Civil War New Orleans is seduced into a web of treason and temptation in this novel by “one of the greats of American noir” (The Guardian).

The Union has captured New Orleans, and Bill Cresap has come to reap the profits. A school friend has a line on some easy money, and Cresap is eager to make his fortune. But when he lands in the Crescent City, still nursing a leg wound from Chancellorsville, he finds that his friend has vanished and taken their start-up capital with him. Just when despair threatens to overpower Cresap, Mignon Fournet arrives to overwhelm him instead. A Creole widow with rebel sympathies and hopeful eyes, she has come to Cresap in desperate need. The army has arrested her father and she will do whatever it takes to find out where he’s detained and what he’s charged with. She begs Cresap to use his army connections to find him. Cresap soon discovers that the stakes are sky high: Fournet’s father shipped supplies to the Confederate commander and could pay for this treason with his life. Dazzled by Fournet, Cresap agrees to help free her father. Although the veteran’s army days are behind him, his war is just starting to heat up…

Something is definitely rotten in the state of the elves.
Someone’s got a serious aim problem—or maybe not—because Green Witch Rhianne Alkenn just dodged an elven arrow by sheer luck.
She fared better than poor Eldrin, who was stabbed with an elven dagger. Coincidence? Not likely, because Rhianne finds out they are targeting her father too.
The elven queen may have been heavy-handed, and Rhianne has plenty to say about the way she was dragged across to the Elven realm, but this is personal now. She’ll deal with the queen later.
Top priority: find the murderous elf before his aim improves.

This little booklet was penned at the end of the 19th century, and ostensibly involves events mere years later. A work of political satire, it chastises the rise of socialism and populism, inferring their fictional rise here as disastrous and leading to chaos. It is of note here that this work, along with others by Lockwood, appear to prognosticate the current political climate of the United States and West at large—and for an apparent religious Catholic of his era, it is not altogether impossible that Lockwood—wittingly or unwittingly—tapped into some mystic forces. Regardless, it is an interesting little political story from its time and is reflective of some of the social ideologies and movements of the age.
