Beschreibung

Dubliners is a collection of 15 short stories by James Joyce. They form a naturalistic depiction of Irish middle class life in and around Dublin in the early years of the 20th century. The stories were written when Irish nationalism was at its peak, and a search for a national identity and purpose was raging; at a crossroads of history and culture, Ireland was jolted by various converging ideas and influences. They centre on Joyce's idea of an epiphany: a moment where a character experiences self-understanding or illumination. Many of the characters in Dubliners later appear in minor roles in Joyce's novel Ulysses. The initial stories in the collection are narrated by child protagonists, and as the stories continue, they deal with the lives and concerns of progressively older people. This is in line with Joyce's tripartite division of the collection into childhood, adolescence and maturity.

In Dubliners Joyce rarely uses hyperbole, relying on simplicity and close detail to create a realistic setting. This ties the reader's understanding of people to their environments. He does not tell readers what to think, rather they are left to come to their own conclusions. This is even more evident when contrasted with the moral judgements displayed by earlier writers such as Charles Dickens. This frequently leads to a lack of traditional dramatic resolution within the stories. The collection as a whole displays an overall plan, beginning with stories of youth and progressing in age to culminate in The Dead. Great emphasis is laid upon the specific geographic details of Dublin, details to which a reader with a knowledge of the area would be able to directly relate. The multiple perspectives presented throughout the collection serve to contrast the characters in Dublin at this time.

Brestille of AiyrnThey've been raiding our planet for generations, but I didn't believe the rumors about twins being bad luck - at least not until the day Gvynette and I were taken. The Terrans snatched us from our home world, brought us to this remote planet, and turned us into guinea pigs, poking and prodding us for their own purposes. I know now that we can never go home. I might have just given up if it hadn't been for the strange new alien I met here. There's something that intrigues me about him. The connection we share is special - that much was clear from the moment we met - or else the scientists are up to more dirty tricks and all of this is just simulated. I don't know who to trust anymore.Derresch of BelorI wasn't supposed to be taken. I should be fighting the Terrans - in a year's time I would have finished my training and been off to war. But now I'm trapped here on this XenoStation with all of the primitive races that are usually the ones being subjected to this kind of inhumane experimentation. I was ready to go down in a blaze of glory, to take as many Terrans with me as I could, but then I met this tough little Aiyurna girl - naïve as you please but strong, defiant even - who made me feel oddly protective. I don't know if I can help her - or if she'll even want me once she finds out what I really am, but she's made me want to go on living, and for now that's enough. In the last chapter you will encounter the biggest twist yet. All the buildup of the previous two chapters will come to a jaw-dropping end.

MISSING PERSONS is the first book in the new Buddy Steel mystery series by New York Times best selling author, Michael Brandman.
Steel...smart, aggressive, ironic, spare and cynical...has been content working homicide at the LAPD until his father, the legendary Sheriff Burton Steel, falls ill with Lou Gehrig's disease. Sheriff Steel is headquartered in Freedom, a privileged coastal community located a hundred miles north of Los Angeles. His health failing, he asks his son Buddy to come home to cover his back and to groom him to be his successor.
Buddy reluctantly agrees. He returns to Freedom despite having outgrown its small town limits, wary of his father's authoritarianism.
No sooner does he hit town than Buddy learns the wife of the high-flying star of a Freedom based world-renowned television ministry has gone missing. A visit to the woman's home leads to a hostile confrontation with her husband's family and Buddy's realization that something greater than simply a missing person is at stake.
Allegiance between father and son provides the backdrop for Buddy's complex investigation of twisted families, avaricious con artists, violent gangs, drugs, corruption, and murder. And added to the mix is an enigmatic femme fatale who succeeds in upending Buddy's tenets regarding contemporary relationships.
MISSING PERSONS is its own book, yet crime fiction fans will find it a joy to trace its literary lineage from Raymond Chandler and Robert B. Parker through to Sue Grafton and Michael Connelly.
