  Republicanism is a political ideology that emphasizes the importance of a government where power rests in the hands of elected representatives, rather than a monarch or dictator. The essence of republicanism lies in the commitment to a system that prioritizes liberty, the rule of law, and the well-being of the public. Republicanism has roots in the ancient political thought of Greece and Rome, particularly through the Roman Republic, which provided the foundational ideas of civic participation and the limitation of power. It was in the Renaissance and Enlightenment periods that these principles were revived and further refined, giving rise to modern republicanism as we know it today. 
  The core tenet of republicanism is that government should be based on consent of the governed. Unlike monarchies, where power is inherited or imposed, republicanism promotes a system in which rulers are elected by the people to serve their interests. This concept of popular sovereignty—government’s authority coming from the consent of the people—distinguishes republicanism from both monarchy and democracy. In republican systems, rulers are expected to act in the best interest of society, balancing the needs of the individual with those of the community, while also safeguarding the common good. 
  A key feature of republicanism is its emphasis on the separation of powers. Drawing from Montesquieu’s influence, republican thought advocates for dividing government authority into branches—executive, legislative, and judicial—in order to prevent any one entity from becoming too powerful. This system of checks and balances ensures that power is distributed and that no single branch or individual can dominate or misuse their authority. This is vital to maintaining the liberty of individuals within a republican system.

  The Three Sources and Three Component Parts of Marxism, by Lenin, is a concise article that examines the historical roots, essence, and content of Marxist teaching. Lenin wrote it on the 30th anniversary of the death of Karl Marx. 
  Soviet propaganda makers lifted a key quote from the article to use as a slogan for posters, inscriptions on monuments, or other propaganda purposes. The phrase was: "The might of Marx's teaching is in its truth."
  The book, The State and Revolution: The Marxist Theory of the State and the Tasks of the Proletariat in the Revolution, was written while preparing for the socialist revolution. At this time the role of the state was of prime importance to the Bolsheviks. Lenin used the text to justify the need for a dictatorship of the proletariat. He also provided definitions for imperialism, socialism, and communism.

  Six months ago, I had never heard the name Eugene Debs. Today, I believe he is one of the greatest orators in history, ranking alongside Napoleon, Robespierre, Lincoln, and Cicero. More importantly, he was a genuine hero, a man to believe in and follow into the fires of hell. His legacy has been unrightly ignored by the same powers that imprisoned and harassed him over his life. He should be an icon, but is unremembered, for reasons he himself goes into. However, there is one key difference between Debs and these other orators: every one of the others fought for empire, or glory, or democracy – but Debs fought for the working man’s right to a decent existence.A railroad man from 15, he founded then turned against the unions as they became tools of the owners, and won 3% of the presidential vote in 1920 despite being a) the Socialist candidate and b) in prison for sedition. The two major speeches missing from this volume can be found in the prior collection, being “You Railroad Men”, whose content is covered in other speeches herein, and “Statement to the Court”, which is summarised in part 4 of Scott Nearing’s analysis.
