Beschreibung

In "Captain Cook's Journal During the First Voyage Round the World made in H.M. bark 'Endeavour,'" James Cook presents an intricate tapestry of exploration and discovery that meticulously chronicles his groundbreaking journey from 1768 to 1771. Written in a candid yet eloquent style, the journal blends vivid descriptions of unfamiliar landscapes, indigenous cultures, and scientific observations, reflecting the Enlightenment ideals of curiosity and empirical inquiry. The text stands as both a personal memoir and a pivotal historical document that captures the spirit of maritime exploration amidst the broader context of European imperial ambitions and shifting worldviews in the 18th century. James Cook, a skilled navigator and cartographer, was driven by a profound desire to chart the unknown territories of the Pacific. His experiences in the Royal Navy and his interaction with various cultures shaped his understanding of the world, making his journal not just an account of naval achievements but also a thoughtful reflection on the encounters between different peoples. Cook's meticulous attention to detail and commitment to scientific exploration set new standards for future voyages. Readers interested in the history of exploration, colonial encounters, or maritime literature will find "Captain Cook's Journal" an invaluable resource. Cook's firsthand observations provide a rare glimpse into a pivotal era of global interaction, making it essential reading for historians, scholars, and any enthusiast of travel literature.

Learning to communicate and manage frustration is part of growing up. But some children don’t master those skills. Suppose their frequent angry outbursts and aggressive behaviors interfere with family life, making friends, or school performance. In that case, they may have the oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), which, by some estimates, affects up to 16 percent of school-age children. Though no statistics are available for younger children, experts say that most children with ODD show signs of the disorder in the preschool years.Oppositional defiant disorder describes a pattern of angry/irritable mood, argumentative/defiant behavior, and/or spitefulness that lasts at least six months in multiple settings. It occurs almost daily in children younger than 5 and at least once a week in older children. (By 6 or 7, most children have learned to express anger in productive, socially acceptable ways.)Examples of anger and irritable mood include frequent loss of temper and being easily annoyed or resentful. Argumentative and defiant behavior includes refusing to obey rules, continually challenging authority, being deliberately annoying to others, and/or blaming others for mistakes or bad behavior. He says that many children with ODD have other mental health challenges, such as anxiety, mood disorders, and language and learning disorders. Trauma, parenting, styles, and other environmental issues may also contribute. As with many mental health conditions, ODD occurs on a continuum. Children with mild ODD may show symptoms only at home or only at school. Moderate ODD may be the diagnosis when a child’s ODD behaviors happen in two settings. ODD is classified as severe when the acting out is seen in three or more locations.

Sacred Drugs explores the numerous ways in which psychoactive substances, from alcohol to psilocybin, cannabis to pharmaceuticals, and coffee to tobacco, intersect with religious life. This cutting-edge volume acknowledges the ubiquity of drug use in American society and that, in fact, being drugged with an altered state of consciousness is a common feature of American life today, as it has been throughout human history and across global ancient cultures. Its focus is on the undeniable and pervasive evidence that drugs are often consumed for religious purposes.
Sacred Drugs touches on the presence of drugs in a number of religious traditions, including Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam. It also delves into the religious textures, sensibilities, and histories of psychoactive agents, sometimes intersecting with these traditions, sometimes with Indigenous cultures around the world, and sometimes not directly related to any particular religion, but instead related to more basic existential religious concerns: a mortal body that suffers, ages, and dies, but also yearns for transcendence, healing, and ecstasy; or the desire to uncover and live true to one's identity, as well as to find energizing communities that bind individuals together; or how to counter chaos, meaninglessness, and disorder. This controversial book will be the go-to volume for readers interested in the complex relationship between religious life and psychoactive substances.

This audiobook is narrated in a calm meditative manner that fits the subject matter of these poems.
Songs of Kabir is a book from 1915 consisting of 100 poems of Kabir, the 15th century Indian poet and mystic, translated to English by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
A weaver by trade and a mystic by nature, the 15th century poet Kabir created timeless works of enlightenment that combine the philosophies of Sufism, Hinduism, and the Kabbala. Expressed in imagery drawn from common life and the universal experience, Kabir's poems possess an appealing simplicity. This collection of 100 songs reflects nearly every aspect of the mystic's thought and emotions: ecstasy and despair, tranquil beatitude and fervid illumination, and moments of intimate love. A fluid, luminous setting of a beloved prayer by Kabir, offering praise to a holy presence both universal and intimate, both of and beyond this world.
The Indian poet Kabir (1440-1518) grew up amidst Hinduism and Islam, and was deeply influenced by both. He had little use for the rites and trappings of any religion, and openly despised the pious quoting of scriptures from any religion. His poetry invoked the divine using both Hindu and Muslim names–“Allah” and “Brahma”–but in all cases, Kabir engaged with the divine in a way that was deep and immediate. Today, Kabir is revered by Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs alike, and his songs are loved by people of all faiths.

It might come as a surprise to some people but there are actually quite a few sex scenes in Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. In this episode, we shall dive into 19th-century courtship and how Alcott writes about courtship etiquette. Laurie is based on Alcott's ex and Friedrich to a man she wanted to marry. In this book we will examine Jo's relationships and how they correlate with Alcott's personal life. Louisa May Alcott had a huge crush on her father´s best friend philosopher Waldo Emerson. Louisa wrote love letters to him but she never sent them and she used to sit under his window singing "Migon´s song". Mignon´s song is a song from Goethe´s novel, Wilhelm Meister´s apprenticeship, which was one of Alcott´s favourite books. Emerson was one of the many models for Friedrich. The main model was philosopher Henry Thoreau who merited Louisa´s lifelong affection.

As a long-time, die-hard Little Women fan, I LOVE this podcast! I stumbled upon it while doing research for a book series I was working on, and I am addicted! Niina is super knowledgeable in all things LW, from the book(s) to the movies and author Louisa May Alcott’s real life. I love that the discussions are based on the book and highlight the differences (sometimes controversial) between the original and newer adaptations. Highly recommended for anybody who loves getting lost in the world of Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March.

Internal and external pressure continues to mount for college professionals to provide evidence of successful activities, programs, and services, which means that, going forward, nearly every campus professional will need to approach their work with a data-informed perspective. But you find yourself thinking "I am not a data person." Yes, you are. Or can be with the help of Amelia Parnell. You Are a Data Person provides context for the levels at which you are currently comfortable using data, helps you identify both the areas where you should strengthen your knowledge and where you can use this knowledge in your particular university role. For example, the rising cost to deliver high-quality programs and services to students has pushed many institutions to reallocate resources to find efficiencies. In addition to programs, services, and pedagogy, professionals are constantly monitoring the rates at which students are entering, remaining enrolled in, and leaving the institution, as those movements impact the institution's financial position. From teaching professors to student affairs personnel and beyond, Parnell offers tangible examples of how professionals can make data contributions at their current and future knowledge level, and will even inspire listeners to take the initiative to engage in data projects.
