Synopsis

The Life of Samuel Johnson is a biography of Dr. Samuel Johnson written by James Boswell. It is regarded as an important stage in the development of the modern genre of biography; many have claimed it as the greatest biography written in English.

Samuel Johnson, often referred to as Dr. Johnson, was an English writer who made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. Johnson was a devout Anglican and committed Tory, and has been described as "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history." He is also the subject of "the most famous single work of biographical art in the whole of literature": James Boswell's The Life of Samuel Johnson.

A biography examining the life of the fortieth president of the United States and the impact of his faith.

Ronald Reagan is one of the most popular and beloved of modern presidents, and one of the greatest presidents in America’s history. But to most scholars, biographers, and critics, the man is still an enigma. What has made him so admired and so successful in all walks of life? The answer is simple. Even when he was the most powerful man in the world, Reagan put his faith and hope in a higher power.

An uplifting biography of America’s fortieth president, Hand of Providence takes a decisive look at the powerful impact Reagan’s faith had on his ideas, motives, and actions. With warmth and insight, Mary Beth Brown delves into Reagan’s spiritual journey—through all of his doubts and despair and ultimate conviction. Brown offers profound stories of God’s provision in Reagan’s life—from first making it as an actor to winning the presidency, from surviving an assassination attempt to eventually changing the face of politics and the world.

Jane Austen's first novel—published posthumously in 1818—tells the story of Catherine Morland and her dangerously sweet nature, innocence, and sometime self-delusion. Though Austen's fallible heroine is repeatedly drawn into scrapes while vacationing at Bath and during her subsequent visit to Northanger Abbey, Catherine eventually triumphs, blossoming into a discerning woman who learns truths about love, life, and the heady power of literature. The satirical novel pokes fun at the gothic novel while earnestly emphasizing caution to the female sex.

In the 1990s deep-cover police agent RS536 took on the Durban underworld as part of a new organised crime intelligence unit. He rubbed shoulders with drug lords, smugglers and corrupt cops, and was instrumental in busting an international drug ring and foiling a bank heist, among many other dangerous engagements.
But then, as the country's new democracy birthed a struggle between the old and the new guard in the South African Police Service, his identity and his life came under threat. In this action-packed account, Johann van Loggerenberg describes how, as a young policeman, he worked closely with the investigative team of the Goldstone Commission to uncover the 'third force' – apartheid security forces that supplied weapons to the Inkatha Freedom Party to destabilise the country.
He also delves into how and why, at the height of state capture at the South African Revenue Service in 2014, he was falsely accused of being an apartheid spy, a lie that persists up to today. Here, finally, is the truth behind the deep-cover police agent RS536.

So much has been written about the late Steve Jobs that Brent Schlender and his co-author, Rick Tetzeli, wisely begin their biography with a prologue that explains why they wrote yet another biography of the Apple co-founder. Schlender, a former reporter for the Wall Street Journal and Fortune, became close to Jobs over twenty-five years of interviews, and was one of the few journalists Jobs trusted.

As chronicled in the bestselling book My Old Man and the Sea, the thirst for living an unconventional life led Daniel Hays to sail around Cape Horn with his father in a boat they built themselves.Thinking his wanderlust satisfied, Hays married and settled down, only to find himself restless for adventure once again. On Whale Island tells the story of how he packed up three boatloads of supplies, his wife, stepson, and two dogs and moved to a remote island off the coast of Nova Scotia, fulfilling a lifelong fantasy of escaping from the confines of civilization and living by his wits.On Whale Island tells three stories. In the foreground, we see Daniel who, not unlike one of Peter Pan's Lost Boys, joyfully lives this permanent boy's life. He generates electricity from solar power, creates a toilet seat from whale vertebra, and greets every storm with enthusiasm. But while Daniel is building windmills and funneling rainwater for showers, his spirited son feels isolated and his wife longs for the life they left behind.Funny, tender, and filled with the details of an unconventional life, this is the story of how the Hays family lived on Whale Island, and how, finally, they had to leave.
