Synopsis

In James Boswell's 'The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson, LL.D', readers are transported back to the literary landscape of 18th-century Scotland as they follow the intimate journey of Boswell and the renowned Dr. Samuel Johnson through the rugged beauty of the Hebrides. This travelogue offers a unique blend of personal observation, intellectual conversation, and vivid descriptions of the stunning landscapes they encounter. Boswell's writing style is engaging and conversational, providing readers with a glimpse into the complex friendship between the two travelers and the intellectual exchanges that shaped their perspectives on life and literature. The book's exploration of culture, history, and the power of friendship makes it a valuable literary contribution to the time period. James Boswell, a Scottish biographer and diarist, drew upon his personal experiences and close relationship with Johnson to create this masterful account of their journey. His deep admiration for Johnson's intellect and wit shines through in the pages, offering readers a deeper understanding of both men as individuals and friends. Boswell's meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture the essence of their journey make this book a compelling read for anyone interested in literature, travel, or intellectual history. Ruth Tucker recounts a harrowing story of abuse at the hands of her husband, a well-educated, charming preacher no less, in hope that her story would help other women caught in a cycle of domestic violence and offer a balanced biblical approach to counter such abuse for pastors and counselors.
Weaving together her shocking story, stories of other women, and powerful stories of husbands who truly have demonstrated Christ’s love to their wives, with reflection on biblical, theological, historical, and contemporary issues surrounding domestic violence, she makes a compelling case for mutuality in marriage and helps women and men become more aware of potential dangers in a doctrine of male headship.

“An engrossing new page turner” about one of old Hollywood’s royal families: “theater people don't get more interesting, and it's a true tale well told" (Hollywood Reporter).   In the early 1930s, Constance Bennett was the highest paid star in Hollywood, famous for dramatic roles before reinventing herself in the classic comedy Topper, starring opposite Cary Grant. Her sister Joan played the femme fatale in films like Scarlet Street and also starred in lighter films like Father of the Bride. Though their names are not well known today, the Bennett family is one of the most storied families in Hollywood history.   The saga begins with Richard Bennett, who left small-town Indiana to become one of the bright lights of the New York stage during the early twentieth century. In time, however, Richard's fame was eclipsed by that of his two acting daughters. But the Bennett family also includes another sister, Barbara, whose promising beginnings as a dancer gave way to a turbulent marriage to singer Morton Downey and a steady decline into alcoholism.   Constance and Joan were among Hollywood's biggest stars, but their personal lives were anything but serene. In 1943, Constance became entangled in a highly publicized court battle with the family of her millionaire ex-husband, and in 1951, Joan's husband, producer Walter Wanger, shot her lover in broad daylight, sparking one of the biggest Hollywood scandals of the 1950s.

This is not CSI. What you encounter as a true bomb detective—or "Bomb Doctor," as some in the FBI call me—are fields of twisted metal containing soot-covered fragments intermingled with human remains. You have carnage and chaos. As you wade into that sea of wailing sirens and screaming survivors awash with the stench of diesel fuel and decaying bodies, your job is to ferret out forensic clues in a type of macabre scavenger hunt to ultimately reconstruct the scene and the explosive device and determine what happened and what the bomb looked like before it was torn asunder. The scavenger hunt can take months—or, in the case of the infamous Collar Bomber, seven painstaking years. The work is worth every second and every horrific image that etches itself into your brain because it helps prevent new horrors. Not all, obviously. We are not superheroes. But unlike shooters, who often just "snap" or seem to act out in random ways, bombers almost always have a story—one that follows an arc.In The Bomb Doctor, my goal is to explain that arc, explode myths, reconstruct reality, and build an understanding of the reason and means behind the mayhem, as well as pull back the curtain on the investigative process that brings bombers to justice.

A piece of Navajo history otherwise forgotten: the first-hand observations of a Mormon trader on the culture and art of his Navajo contemporariesThe overwhelming interest of Will Evans, proprietor of the Shiprock Trading Company, in Navajo culture spanned a half century. He shared his enthusiasm through frequent publication of portraits, vignettes, and essays; he also compiled much of his writing into a book manuscript. His subjects were his customers, friends, and neighbors, their stories of historic events such as the Long Walk, and their life as he understood it. Evans’s writings were colored by his uncommon friendship and familiarity with Navajo people but also by who he was: a trader, folk artist, and Mormon. Inspired by sand paintings, Evans appropriated their sacred images for his own paintings of murals and everyday objects. In his writing, he preserved unique records of Navajo history and of individuals about whom little biographical information otherwise remains. Much of that was based on what he heard from his Navajo acquaintances, but it also drew on his direct observations and particular beliefs about the people, their culture, and their history. Evans’s granddaughter Susan E. Woods collaborated with historian Robert S. McPherson, author of numerous books on Navajo and Four Corners history, to prepare and publish Will Evans’s manuscript, which is illustrated with a remarkable and rare selection of photos from the collections of Evans and his colleagues.
