Synopsis

AI and Society examines the sweeping societal changes brought about by artificial intelligence, particularly its profound effects on jobs, education, and ethical norms. As AI adoption increases, the book explores the economic transformations underway and the necessity for educational systems to adapt, fostering critical thinking and lifelong learning skills. Ethical considerations surrounding AI, such as bias and privacy, are also central, advocating for a human-centered approach to AI development and deployment. The book uniquely bridges economics, education, and philosophy to provide a holistic understanding of AI's implications.

It begins by defining AI and its historical context, then progresses through sections addressing the future of work, AI in education, and ethical dilemmas. For example, while AI may displace some jobs, it also creates new opportunities requiring different skill sets. The book supports its arguments with data, studies, and policy insights, offering practical guidance for policymakers, educators, and business leaders.

Ultimately, AI and Society emphasizes proactive adaptation to harness AI's benefits while mitigating risks. Rather than passively accepting technological determinism, the book encourages shaping AI's future responsibly. It offers a roadmap for navigating the complex world of AI, promoting informed decision-making and continuous learning in the face of rapid technological advancements.

Poor Tom - Living King Lear

King Lear is perhaps the most fierce and moving play ever written. And yet there is a curious puzzle at its center. The figure to whom Shakespeare gives more lines than anyone except the king—Edgar—has often seemed little more than a blank, ignored and unloved, a belated moralizer who, try as he may, can never truly speak to the play’s savaged heart. He saves his blinded father from suicide, but even this act of care is shadowed by suspicions of evasiveness and bad faith. In Poor Tom, Simon Palfrey asks us to go beyond any such received understandings—and thus to experience King Lear as never before. He argues that the part of Edgar is Shakespeare’s most radical experiment in characterization, and his most exhaustive model of both human and theatrical possibility. The key to the Edgar character is that he spends most of the play disguised, much of it as “Poor Tom of Bedlam,” and his disguises come to uncanny life. The Edgar role is always more than one person; it animates multitudes, past and present and future, and gives life to states of being beyond the normal reach of the senses—undead, or not-yet, or ghostly, or possible rather than actual. And because the Edgar role both connects and retunes all of the figures and scenes in King Lear, close attention to this particular part can shine stunning new light on how the whole play works. The ultimate message of Palfrey’s bravura analysis is the same for readers or actors or audiences as it is for the characters in the play: see and listen feelingly; pay attention, especially when it seems as though there is nothing there.

The world is full of places that, for various reasons, have earned a reputation as deadly destinations. From war zones to natural disasters, some locations are marked by extreme danger, making them almost inhospitable for those who venture too close. This chapter aims to explore the factors that contribute to these perilous places, offering a broader understanding of what makes a destination deadly.

At the core of every dangerous place is a unique combination of environmental, political, and social factors that amplify the risks for those who live or travel there. Conflict zones, for instance, are often marked by violence, political instability, and lawlessness, creating environments where human life is under constant threat. In these regions, wars, civil unrest, and insurgent groups create an atmosphere of chaos where survival can be a daily struggle.

Natural disasters also play a significant role in shaping the deadliest destinations. Earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions are just a few of the catastrophic events that turn once-thriving areas into desolate wastelands. These natural phenomena strike without warning, leaving little time for escape and often causing widespread devastation.

But the threats are not always as immediate or obvious as bombs or floods. Some of the deadliest destinations are places where hidden dangers lurk beneath the surface. Toxic landscapes, such as the irradiated zones of Chernobyl, remain dangerous long after the initial disaster has passed. Similarly, remote wilderness areas, such as the jungles of the Amazon or the frozen tundra of Antarctica, may seem tranquil on the surface, but they can be life-threatening to those who are ill-prepared for the extreme conditions.

'One of the most vivid personal memoirs of the Second World War. Few writers have bettered his description of the experiences of front line infantrymen under the stress of battle.' - Max HastingsLion Rampant is Robert Woollcombe's graphic account of his experiences as a front-line infantry officer with the King's Own Scottish Borderers during the desperate battle for Normandy and the Allied advance into Germany. Transformative Experience by L.A. Paul challenges the foundations of how we make life's biggest decisions. From becoming a parent to changing careers—or even becoming a vampire in a thought experiment—some choices don’t just alter your circumstances; they change you. Paul introduces the concept of transformative experiences—decisions that are both epistemically transformative (you can’t know what they’re like until you live them) and personally transformative (they change your core values, preferences, or identity).

Traditional models of rational decision-making assume we can evaluate outcomes based on what we currently value. But what happens when the experience itself reshapes those values? If you can't imagine what the future will feel like, or if your future self values different things, how can you make a rational choice now?

Blending vivid examples, from parenthood to philosophical thought experiments, Paul explores the limits of foresight, the nature of self, and how we might embrace decision-making not as prediction—but as discovery. Transformative Experience is a groundbreaking work that forces us to rethink autonomy, authenticity, and the very meaning of rational choice.
