Beschreibung

In "A Monograph of the Trilobites of North America: with Coloured Models of the Species," Jacob Green meticulously explores the rich diversity and intricate morphology of trilobites, a group of extinct marine arthropods that thrived in the Paleozoic era. The book is notable for its detailed illustrations and colored models, which serve not only as scientific representations but also as artistic renditions that enhance the reader's understanding of these fascinating creatures. Green employs a didactic yet accessible literary style, intertwining dense scientific analysis with descriptive prose that captivates both the expert and lay reader. This work is a seminal contribution to paleontology and reflects the era's burgeoning interest in natural history and classification systems. Jacob Green, an esteemed American paleontologist, was driven by a profound curiosity about Earth's prehistoric life and a desire to document North America's unique fossil record. His dedication to meticulous research and his background in biological sciences equipped him with the tools necessary to advance the understanding of trilobites, bridging the gap between science and art in his presentations. Green's scholarly approach and passion for the period's geology influenced his commitment to this landmark publication. This monograph is highly recommended for students, researchers, and enthusiasts alike, as it not only highlights the scientific significance of trilobites but also invites appreciation for the aesthetic qualities inherent in nature. Green's authoritative voice and visual artistry make this work an indispensable addition to any collection dedicated to paleontology, providing insights that enrich our understanding of ancient ecosystems.

The Cycling City - Bicycles and...

Cycling has experienced a renaissance in the United States, as cities around the country promote the bicycle as an alternative means of transportation. In the process, debates about the nature of bicycles—where they belong, how they should be ridden, how cities should or should not accommodate them—have played out in the media, on city streets, and in city halls. Very few people recognize, however, that these questions are more than a century old.

The Cycling City is a sharp history of the bicycle’s rise and fall in the late nineteenth century. In the 1890s, American cities were home to more cyclists, more cycling infrastructure, more bicycle friendly legislation, and a richer cycling culture than anywhere else in the world. Evan Friss unearths the hidden history of the cycling city, demonstrating that diverse groups of cyclists managed to remap cities with new roads, paths, and laws, challenge social conventions, and even dream up a new urban ideal inspired by the bicycle. When cities were chaotic and filthy, bicycle advocates imagined an improved landscape in which pollution was negligible, transportation was silent and rapid, leisure spaces were democratic, and the divisions between city and country were blurred. Friss argues that when the utopian vision of a cycling city faded by the turn of the century, its death paved the way for today’s car-centric cities—and ended the prospect of a true American cycling city ever being built.

Sisters of the Jungle explores the history of primatology, a rare scientific discipline led primarily by women, from pioneers like Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey to author Keriann McGoogan's own adventurous field studies.

Since the 1970s, the science of primatology has been dominated by women—a unique reversal, as men usually outnumber women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.

Today, one of those women is primatologist Keriann McGoogan, who has traveled to the far corners of the earth in search of wild primates. In Sisters of the Jungle, McGoogan combines stories about her own studies of howler monkeys (the loudest living primate) and lemurs (the most endangered group of animals on the planet) with those of the women who paved the way: intrepid scientists like Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, Biruté Galdikas, and Alison Jolly who broke boundaries, made astonishing discoveries and ultimately shaped the trajectory of an entire branch of science.

Midwifery is a practice that has been integral to childbirth for centuries, evolving from ancient traditions to a sophisticated combination of art and science. At its core, midwifery is the profession of providing care to women during pregnancy, labor, birth, and the postpartum period. The midwife’s role extends far beyond delivering babies; it encompasses emotional, physical, and educational support, ensuring that the birthing experience is as safe and empowering as possible for mothers and their families. In many ways, midwifery represents a holistic approach to birth, integrating medical knowledge with compassionate care and respect for the natural process of labor.

The art of midwifery is founded on intuition, experience, and a deep understanding of the needs of women throughout their reproductive journey. Midwives possess a unique ability to read the subtle cues of a woman's body, supporting her during labor with techniques that promote comfort, relaxation, and confidence. Whether through guided breathing, massage, or providing words of encouragement, the midwife’s role often transcends the clinical to become a deeply personal and emotional experience for both the birthing person and their support system.

On the other hand, midwifery is also a science, deeply rooted in medical knowledge and evidence-based practices. Midwives are trained to monitor the health of both mother and baby, assess potential risks, and intervene when necessary. They are skilled in recognizing complications and know when to collaborate with obstetricians or other healthcare professionals to ensure the best possible outcomes. This balance between intuition and medical expertise allows midwives to provide a level of care that is both compassionate and scientifically sound.

Pneumonia is a serious lung infection that affects millions of people worldwide, ranging from mild cases to life-threatening conditions. It occurs when the air sacs in one or both lungs become inflamed and fill with fluid or pus, making it difficult for oxygen to reach the bloodstream. This inflammation can result from various pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Pneumonia can occur as a complication of another illness or as a primary infection, and it affects people of all ages, though certain groups, such as the elderly, young children, and individuals with compromised immune systems, are at higher risk.
Understanding pneumonia starts with recognizing the different types of the disease. The most common types are bacterial, viral, and fungal pneumonia, each caused by different pathogens and each requiring distinct treatment approaches. Bacterial pneumonia is typically caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, which is the most common bacterial pathogen responsible for hospitalizations. Other bacteria, such as Haemophilus influenzae and Staphylococcus aureus, can also lead to pneumonia. Viral pneumonia, often caused by influenza viruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and coronaviruses, is another common form, and its severity can vary based on the viral strain and the individual’s overall health. Fungal pneumonia is less common and typically occurs in individuals with weakened immune systems, with fungi like Histoplasma, Coccidioides, and Cryptococcus causing infections.
