Beschreibung

One of those great events in English history, which occur at distant intervals, and form, respectively, a sort of bound or landmark, to which all other events, preceding or following them for centuries, are referred, is what is called the Norman Conquest. The Norman Conquest was, in fact, the accession of William, duke of Normandy, to the English throne. This accession was not altogether a matter of military force, for William claimed a right to the throne, which, if not altogether perfect, was, as he maintained, at any rate superior to that of the prince against whom he contended. The rightfulness of his claim was, however, a matter of little consequence, except so far as the moral influence of it aided him in gaining possession. The right to rule was, in those days, rather more openly and nakedly, though not much more really, than it is now, the right of the strongest.

How did diverse women in America understand, explain, and act upon their varied constraints, positions, responsibilities, and worldviews in changing American society between the end of the Revolution and the beginning of the Civil War? Antebellum Women: Private, Public, Partisan answers the question by going beyond previous works in the field. The authors identify three phases in the changing relationship of women to civic and political activities. They first situate women as "deferential domestics" in a world of conservative gender expectations; then map out the development of an ideology that allowed women to leverage their familial responsibilities into participation as "companionate co-workers" in movements of religion, reform, and social welfare; and finally trace the path of those who followed their causes into the world of politics as "passionate partisans." The book includes a selection of primary documents that encompasses both well-known works and previously unpublished texts from a variety of genre

"The Navy" by Harold Clark takes you from the streets of Baltimore to the dark thirty chaos of Grenada's invasion, where Marines hit the beaches with guns blazing. The book displays what the real Navy looks like—where sailors live by mottos like 'Keep the screws turning and the lights burning' and learn hard lessons like 'tonnage has its privileges in the shipping channel.' Relive the Gator Navy days aboard LCU 1655 during Operation Northern Wedding, when a near-collision with a tanker in the Norwegian Sea taught Clark's crew to scan everything—high and low. Feel the tension of Beirut's Red Beach operations and the bitter retreat when the American flag came down, and the Syrian flag went up. Clark tells about his distinctive journey—a Navy life—told straight from the gut by a sailor who lived every minute of it, from boot camp to his final voyage aboard the USS Whidbey Island.
